  • Electical Issues on 2008 MK5 GTI

I've had a long and interesting electrical issues history with this car.. Please forgive wall of text

My car started having issues with the dashboard and randomly not starting. I went to start my car one morning and nothing happened. No starter motor sound or anything. I figured, okay, dead battery, and went away.

Came back a few days later, and, out of habit, hit the unlock button my car remote. car unlocked. I thought 'wow, thats weird'. went to start the car and it started

Also, a few times while driving, all electrical systems in my car seemed to intermittently drop out. My dashboard lights would all die, speedo would go from 100km/h to 0, interior lights would turn off, the whole shebang.

Took the car to the local mechanics (Kmart Tyre and Auto). They confirmed that my battery was in tip top shape, and suggested i might have a loose earth somewhere. THey went through my car and checked/tightened them all up, but couldnt see any that could be an issue.

For the past few weeks, i havent had anymore dash dropouts, but ive noticed that my headlights seem to dim (almost to the point of turning off) intermittently while driving at night (in bush roads with no streetlights).

Does anyone have any experience with issues similar to these, or know what it could be? Im considering selling teh car before the issues get worse (really dont want to, i love my golf...)

    Thanks
    Dan

Kmart Tyre and Auto, never the best place to take any car to, let alone VW's.

They're actually pretty good (I know someone that works there).

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience with dash power outages and headlight dimming. It seems to happen a bit more when my car is higher in the rev range.

Sounds like an earthing issue to me. But also have a quick check for any smaller auxiliary wires that that might have come loose.
        Check the fuse box too.

Best to take it to a local auto electrician, they should be able to sort it out.

          Could be the ignition switch.

Also check the 50A fuses on the front of the E-box in the engine bay.
