  • Mk5 golf GTI - Tune advice?

    Hey guys,

I recently purchased a factory standard 2007 golf GTI (DSG) after selling my Mazda 6 MPS, the MPS was great but caused consistent maintenance issues and costs which are best left in the past...

I have been looking around at different options for a tune but have been fairly indecisive as to which company/brand to use. I am reasonably conservative and do not plan on doing anything over stage 1, and would rather not spend excess money on intake/exhaust mods and the like. Whilst i will certainly take pricing into consideration, i will not cheap out on a poor quality product to save a bit of money.

From what i can gather, the two most recommended options are either APR or GIAC, however i have also noticed that several seem happy with Bluefin for a simple stage 1 tune.

Taking into account that i will likely NOT exceed a simple stage 1 software upgrade, and the fact that the car will be used on the track several times a year, are there any options or avenues which can be suggested to me? Or any recommended tuners?

Thanks in advance, any help is greatly appreciated.
    Josh.

Edit: On a quick side note, does anyone have any experience with ABT? A reputable tuner who used to take care of my MPS seems to use them.

A couple of other names other than the ones you've already mentioned are Viezu and Custom Code who both do a good tune for the MkV GTI (plus are also good guys and forum sponsors).

Viezu also can package hardware and you may be pleasantly surprised that you can get a DP and tune for not a lot more than other tuners are charging for a stage 1 tune only.

Although a DP only gives ~10kw it's the torque increase that is most noticeable.

In the end though if you're just going stage 1, they are all going to give you similar numbers. So go with whatever is local and who you trust to do the right thing by you and your car.

Im not sure if anyone else had this problem, i went with APR and as a result the 4th gear change is extremely rough at times. Turn the tune off and its fairly perfect (apart from bunny hops) but turn it back on and its there. I have to drive around in Manual mode.

Something to consider, apparently it happens to Siroccos more frequently as well

I love that you can turn the APR on and off with a simple procedure, that was the main selling point for me.

DSG reset might help there mate. VCDS can do it in a couple of minutes.

Lots of tuners out there besides the 4(?) mentioned so far.

Work out what features you want (switchable / removeable / etc) and see who can accommodate those requirements. Then see who's closest to home for your budget.

Thanks for the help guys. I've been quoted about $700 for a Superchips Bluefin courier delivered, if the stage 1 tunes are all pretty similar then this may be the way to go. It can also be reverted to standard pretty easily from what I have read.

Yeah well I did kind of say they're all about equal... that is except Superchips/Bluefin. They're generally down about 10kW and a reasonable amount on torque too relative to the other tunes.

There's nothing bad with them if you're just going stage 1. Main advantage is that you can download the files and program yourself..... though Custom Code offer the same service as do a few of the other tuning brands.

                  I have a Bluefin & it's great but I agree with what tigger73 says.

If I was doing it again I'd probably look at Custom Code or DNA - wouldn't spend more than $800ish though

Thanks for letting me know, as I said I'd rather pay a little extra if it's a better product.

I will definitely check out custom code since they offer a similar service of free delivery, but I'll continue to look around.

As others said there is not much difference between the brands, especially if you go no further than the stage1. The Viezu is really good on MK5 GTI. Consider also Autologic, their tunes are very refined smooth and so far I didn't have any problems with Autologic. I could let you know who does the Autologic tunes in your state, if you're interested.
