Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

As a frequent visitor, I thought I would finally became a member. I regret in not doing so in the past! - but that's another story.

Like others before, I have had a few problems with my current golf, annoying to say the least, but I thought I would share this latest episode.

About 2 months ago, I noticed that I had no sound coming from the instrument cluster, i.e., turning signal indicators, headlight buzzer and other warning buzzers etc. I took the car to my local dealership and was told that the instrument cluster had to be replaced.

A few weeks ago, the car was at the dealership and the instrument cluster was replaced. To my dismay the language display had not been changed from German and to my harrow or joy I noticed my odometer reading was not what I had driven in with. At first I thought it was in mph.

I took the car in with 29,975k and drove off with 19,910k. I asked the service manager to explain what had occurred. Was informed that there wasn't much they could do as the information from my old cluster was transferred across from the service computer to the new instrument cluster and it appeared that there was a fault some-where! No luck in having the issue resolved, only a few half baked suggestions from keeping it quite, to having a second service book.(from my mates of course ).

What a position to be in I need this mess sorted out as it will have certain ramification in the future!!

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers

Mate at Vw you will nt be able to recalibrate the odometer. You have what you have im afraid. Only someone with MIleage calibration software can do the job for you. Google that and you will find someone. I think i would be more upset if you had 39k instead of 29k i think you got a bargain mate!!! Anyway are you near another dealer, you may want to try and have a better experience else where.
Cheers and hope you have better luck

I think you should go back and get it fixed .. free .. if not see a solicitor .. this is not so much for the aspect of incomplete work, but is from teh viewpoint that you need to sign some sort of declaration on selling the car to a dealer that the odometer has not been interfered with. If you knowingly sell the car and this comes out it may come back to you

Unless you pay FBT on your car where your tax depends on your mileage, I wouldn't worry about it too much - especially if you keep it for a while, the difference between 140000km and say 150000km is not much. Most people who do the dodge wind it back 50000km or so.

Just enjoy the higher resale value and additional warranty you now have

welcome to the forum dont be shy to post

yeah i wouldnt worry about it too much if i were you. but if you want to be honest about it, then get the MANAGER of the service place to sign a statement outlining what happened and keep it with the service book (dont let just the little parrot at the front desk sign it). oh and btw the dealer can change the odo's between miles and km's through their computers afaik.

Thnx for the replies. It's something you don't come across very often. I agree with Mischa, and will speak directly to the service manager.

I'll will get something in writing from either the dealership or from VWA, (just in case I decide to offload the car in the future).

Now for the fun part- sorting out the next service schedule interval, had the 25k service done in Sept 07.

            Cheers
