  • Pirelli vs APR tuned Gti

    hi all,

I'm seriously considering buying a GTi in March when I return to Aus.

I have been looking and reading so much my head is sore!
I quite like the Pirelli edition with the extra KW bonus and styling package.

Any advice regarding this as I have seen a few on carsales and the prices seem to pretty close to the standard GTi's 19k-25k for a decent mileage version.

Any owners please share your thoughts.

How is the tuning in the Pirelli compare to say a APR stage 1 on a mkV gti?

I quite like the Pirelli wheels and the interior has kind of grown on me.
But there are a couple of nice "lightly modded" GTi's for sale as well, including one listed on here that have already had dollars spent.

The Pirelli GTI* uses a K04 Turbo versus the K03 Turbo used in the GTI. The tuned GTI should run a bit quicker, but the K04 pulls all the way to redline whereas the K03 does not.

The rarity of the Pirelli and the coolness factor makes it the better choice. Plus the bigger Turbo has way more tuning potential versus the K03.

Stronger engine internals, and cast alloy tanks on the intercooler, too.

Pirelli + tune, is my take on it.

I have a tuned Pirelli and it's great fun.

Ever since looking into buying a MK5 I had my eye on the Pirelli Ed, for all the aforementioned reasons (S3 engine). Plus as you've identified, the interior is super cool and pips tartan hands down, wheels are nicer than GTi and colour coded bodykit standard.

Even in stock trim the Pirelli was a fun car. I drove an APR stage 1 tuned GTi when I was looking and I still felt the Pirelli was a more rounded out car. Now with the addition of Intake / Exhaust and Tune its a different car. Quite fast in fact and to be honest the power output is on if not above the capability of a FWD chassis.

Either way great cars. But if you want the extra cool and extra ponies go the Pirelli Represent!!

          Thanks for the replies.
I'm tilting to Pirelli Edition! Have one for sale in QLD for 21k with just over 95k on the odometer, one owner too.

Given the extra KW and the addition of the K04 turbo, the Pirelli seems like a good buy, especially when a standard mkv gti sells for around 18K- 20K.

What scared me a little was the cost of replacing the Pirelli P Zeros!!

Oh just chuck on some Kumhos @ $165 per corner and be done with it.

I'd go the Pirelli over the GTI and then get Gavin to tune it.

                LOL thanks mate

I'd always go the flasher starting point with the car, Pirelli a much improved vehicle over the GTI.

I think not putting Pirellis on it would be an injustice

Don't be afraid to shop around. I picked up a set of 235/40/18 Pirelli P-Zeros for my Pirelli with nitrogen filled for under $1000 local at a Bob Jane T-Mart about four months ago

That's what I thought, I know they're only types, but that's part of the whole package!

I saw some stage 1 tune specs and was pretty blown away!! WRX eating power.

Just concerned how well the DSG can handle the power.- re flash?

Ah, good to know - are you Brisbane based Gavin?

I've heard good things about the Pirelli edition regarding better engine internal as well? A stronger engine is always a good thing!!

But is the engine the same as the Golf R or S3? Or just a improved Gti?

IIRC the S3 was the first to use this engine, followed by the Pirelli and then the R.

                            Yeah Northside, Narangba.

Yeah but 235's are way cheaper than 225's because they fit a commodore and 225's are the oem fitment.
