Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Gti power loss

Today I was driving to a location , 200klm south of Perth , as I got about 20min from the town my golf gti lost power while cruise control was on , it was intermittent 3seconds .
This happend about every minute . Outside temp was 44 , very hot day !
Got to Williams and stayd there for 45min.
Filled up with fuel bp98 and head back to Perth , everything was fine until I got about 20min from Perth , the cut outs started again , through the city I had no boost also .
Any ideas !! I had half tank of United 100 octane fuel (ethanol) on the way down.
    Fuel pump ?
    Sensors ?
Any suggestions would be appreciated ,,

Need to scan the ECU for errors - there are lots of things that could cause this
2012.1 Skoda Octavia VRS DSG Wagon - Carbonio cold air intake and pipe - HPA Motorsports BBK 355mm rotors 6 pot calipers
APR Stage II ECU - APR 3" exhaust down pipe & high flow catalyst
APR/HP Roll bars - Eibach springs and Bilstien shocks
Supaloy lower control arms - Enkei 18*8 Wheels

Not the case at all. The best advice was given above, it needs scanning.

You can throw money at it and change parts left, right and centre or diagnose it correctly once and fix it.

That still wouldn't help you fix your problem though.

Intermittent problems are a pain to solve

There is nothing useful to see under the bonnet when the engine is working ok, any action taken is a shot in the dark

It's essential to see the ECU error log to get a pointer as to what happened - this will guide the direction/focus of all remedial efforts

If you had a hard mechanical fault, looking under the bonnet would be viable
If you have a hard electrical problem there is nothing to see, the ECU error log is required, it's the nature of modern cars

If you want to be able to diagnose at home, get a bluetooth car dongle and OBD scan software on your phone, that will be enough to get error codes and hints as to what is happening
If you don't want to invest and learn about this stuff, the www won't be any help, you'll need to rely on your service agent

About 3 months ago replaced the follower .
Had my recall fixed in 2008 for fault with low fuel pump module I'm sure they said . Prior to me buying the golf 2 years ago .last year had recall on my coil packs.
Pcv upgraded as with a diverter valve
                    .
Visit to a vw mechanic tomorrow , fuel systems I will leave to a specialist ...

For that error in addition to the above mentioned faults it could also be the HPFP itself, jamming or a collapsed spring or even the rail valve or even perhaps the pressure sensor but the first thing you would do is look at the follower for sure.
I have seen all of the above fail in a couple of cars, the rail valve 3 times now one standard one in a GTI and twice with RS4 valves in Golf R's and an S3. same goes for the HPFP's.

Did the follower last year @120000klm
I changed the fuel filter yesterday and no codes have come up !
The filter was absolutely blocked .... I have run very low lately and may have picked up some crap from the tank ....
So today I will be going on a long drive 4 hour return trip ! This will be the test ..

got back from my trip ! will have to raise the issue about fuel filters , i still had the old version filter on the car prior to the problem, i replaced it with the 6.6 bar version (mann) that i got from ecs tuning when i ordered other bits and bobs .
as i have read in various forums ect , dirty filters will cause problems , and if you do run very low in the tank it will or may contribute problems i had .....
its the first problem i have had after two years of ownership of a mk5 gti ... fingers crossed
