  • Tips for buying GTI?

Hello all. a Mk5 GTI is on my list of cars to look into so I would love to hear any feedback on how Mk5 GTI's are travelling these days. I'd be looking around the 20k mark and would prefer under 80,000kms on the clock. Are there are known problems I should be aware of? Any models/years to steer clear of? How is the DSG?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Hey there!

Main things that need to be regularly checked are:

    - DSG
    - Water Pump
    - PCV Valve : Get a PCV Revamp (around $120)
    - High Oil Consumption : This is normal, but you will notice a high consumption if you play with the loud pedal.
    - Coilpacks : Had one go on me before the car was tuned, cheap to put in R8 versions. Around $90 for a set.
    - Diverter Valve : Went on me after I got it Tuned. Cheap to replace - $100
    - Cam Follower : This will need to be checked every 20,000KM if not Tuned. If you're tuned, every 10,000 as it can wear out quickly. Best to change it regularly then have it blow on you.

They will be fine if the car is serviced regularly and looked after though. Before or after you take the car for a drive, organise for someone in the area (most likely a Forum member) to scan the car. This will show up any faults that the car has and will tell you most of what needs addressing if anything is wrong.

Hope this helps. Sometimes you'll get a car with absolutely nothing wrong, sometimes you'll get a couple of gremlins. The joys of car ownership.
