  • Revs drop very very low (almost stall) on start

    Hi all,

Recently upon starting the car revs drop below the regular idle rev range. It feels like it struggles for a split second (feels like it's close to stalling - but hasn't actually done so) before climbing back up to the normal idle rev range.

    Added points:
    - It doesn't do this all the time, it's quite intermittent but I've worked out that it has only done this whilst the engine has already warmed up ie. after driving it somewhere and turning the engine off then back on shortly after, it's done it but I have yet to experience this starting cold.
    - Car has ~60k KM (MKV GTI)

Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

    Thanks everyone!

Sounds like an air leak? MAybe PCV or a split vacuum hose? (totally guessing.)

What is your mechanic in the workshop saying? That should be your starting point.
You just can't diagnose and repair your car on the line, yet.
It could be many things, and even if you get the hints what it could be, you most likely need skills to repair it. Replacing the components without verifying the fault could cost you much more than you would take it to a qualified mechanic.

How do you know what area he is? His location says "Sydney".

The Sydney greater metro area covers a distance of approx 65km from the coast to the base of the Blue Mountains at Emu Plains. From North (Hornsby) to South(Campbelltown) it's about 60km. CAmden GTI are in the extreme South West.

Maybe you know something I don't, if so , fair enough but their are a fair few options for VW service in Sydney without driving 1.5-2.5hrs.

NB: I get my vehicle serviced at Camden GTI. They do a great job. I work about 2km from their workshop.

Thanks Brad. It was checked for leaks a little while ago (for something else) and PCV was replaced when that went as well so would be surprised if it was this! Thanks for some ideas though, much appreciated.

Yeah I definitely need to take it in for my mechanic to look at it, but at the same time it's not a bad idea trying to troubleshoot and see if anyone else has had a similar issue that I've had. At the end of the day I will need to take it to my mechanic to get fixed but it's nice to have some idea of what problem is before going in (if at all possible).

Thanks for the recommendation for a mechanic but as Brad said, there are quite a few which are close/more convenient.

            Thanks for the reply Transporter

That was just a hint and there is a chance that since he has a car that can travel, he could be close to them during his daily or weekly driving.

What do you want brad? I don't understand the reason for your post. It's reasonable to suggest that anyone who is posting here can google, and he/she can find the shop that is close to them or ask Camden GTI who they would suggest.

Fair enough. To start your troubleshooting, what trouble codes did you get when you scanned it? With out that, there are not many steps you can take, to successfully troubleshoot any current car on the road.

All I'm saying is that Sydney is nothing like Radelaide. It's sprawling, overpopulated & the traffic is lousy at the best of times & Camden GTI is right on the extreme fringe of the area. I do the commute from the coast to Campbelltown M-F & even with SUNA re-routes it's popping out to 75minutes AGAINST the traffic flow. Add another 30% onto that for with the flow.

OP: you have a specialist VW guy or a generalist "fixes everything" mech?

Oh, I'm aware of that. Even in Adelaide you can't get from one end to another in a reasonable time.
The road works (part of everyday life and never ending) are making it 100% worst.
