  • DIY: Number plate hole fill on a MKV R32

    Ladies and gents,

Courtesy of Peter Dim (Pet3) I decided to take on the removal of my number plate holder and filled in the holes. I took a few of my own photos so thought I would upload a thread.

Photos were not taken of each step as I was too busy man handling everything with another R32 owner. Took us about an hour to do both cars.

    Tools Needed:

    - Phillips & torx screw driver
    - Sikaflex 227 (white)
    - Heavy duty stick on Velrco
    - ROMAK Bifurcated steel rivets 9.8mm head diameter - 12.5mm x 3.8mm Bifurcated rivets.
    - Masking tape
    - Degreaser
    - Hammer

    Steps:

    1. Remove the front nose cone. Looks confusing when you look at it but straightforward once you see it.

    2. Using the screw driver and a hammer, punch through the 4 x plugs from the number plate holder. Once you punch them through they cannot be reused. Remove the holder from the grille.

    3. Spray a bit of a degreaser around the 4 x holes to give them a good clean (both inner & outer the grill)

    4. Grab one of the bifurcated rivets & carefully place them in one of the holes and make sure they are in the centre. Apply masking tape over the rivet head to secure the position as a guide.

    5. Slow apply sikaflex to the backing of the rivet head & rivet legs and circumference. The goal is to ensure there is sufficient contact between the inner grill & rivet to ensure a bond.

    6. Repeat steps 4-5 for the rest of the holes

    7. Leave grill to dry flat overnight - can dry within a few minutes/hours if you use certain types of glues.

    8. Once the sikaflex has dried remove the masking tape from the rivet heads slowly.

    9. Clean any residue left from the tape and on the grille.

    10. Apply the stick on velcro to the number plate & mount the number plate onto grille. I used the original screws as they were still in very good condition with a number plate cover over the plate for a more elegant look.

    11. and finally, re-install the grille, stand back & admire the tremendous difference

I just used stainless coach bolts of similar size when I did mine and another.

Looking good Bazz! What's the point of covering up a unique piece of the car with a hideous plate holder VW.

          3DR! Nice!

I made the smaller plate holder from the original one. Cut a section out of the middle and plastic welded the 2 halfs together.
I have gone back to the original size atm as a piece of steel flew off a truck and broke that one and the silver bit.
