Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Mine are crap! They go Ape sh@T at the smallest bit of rain. Most times i either use my finger (light tap) or put it straight to slow (the position after intermit).

They should have just left it up to the driver to determine the intermittent speed. My toyota has a small toggle you can adjust and it's great.

Huh? What sort of Toyota are you talking about here? A Presara or Levin ZR with rain sensing wipers? They have exactly the same set up as VW with a sensitivity adjustment. Or are you just referring to any other Toyota with intermittent variable adjustment like just about any other vehicle that doesn't have rain sensing wipers?!?

We have absolutely no problem with our MKV GTI rain sensing function. We usually keep the sensitivity adjustment all the way to the left out of the 5 positions (least sensitive). If it ain't raining, we turn the stalk to the off position, simple as that - no "false" wipes when it's not raining.

Mine work OK ~60% of the time and are absolute, total cr@p for the remainder of the time.

They will swipe a completely dry windscreen on a sunny day driving over the Tasman Bridge (moist air?), yet will refuse to work when the windscreen is so plastered with water I cannot see through it.

I spend more time fiddling with the wipers' adjustment switch than I would on a completely manual wiper system. Great advancement in technology, VW Friggin useless..

Can't honestly say I have a problem with mine, occasionally they will wipe once when it is not raining but overall they work just fine.

          Cheers

Mine work good [early '06] none of the problems listed. The only incident I have had is my wife had bumped the lever while cleaning the interior & I hadn't noticed it was turned on. While driving a drop of water fell from a tree right onto senser & turned the wipers on. That however is not the fault of the car but mine.
I reckon they are a great feature, particularly in intermittant drizzle while you are chatting.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

I drive an 08 MkV with this function, and normally leave it on rain sensing pos'n. I understand the sensor works by infrared, so it detects when something passes over or hits the glass in front of the sensor. I have had them go off when a small shadow passes over the windscreen on a bright sunny day. My only niggle though is that when the stank is in the rain sensing position, and you want 1 wipe, say to clear condensation off the outside of the screen in the morning, you have to switch them off then press down again on the stalk. PITA.

just clarifying, i meant the old driver adjustable intermittent wipers. My toyota does not have rain sensing wipers.

I'd be perfectly happy to give away my fancy sensor-wipers for a conventional variable-intermittent wiper function. It might be old-fashioned, but it's reliable and it works.

Yep the wifes 08 GT Sport has same problem, what a pain the arse and somewhat dangerous in my opinion. Absolute crap but then again its a $40K car and not a BMW. Perhaps VW are just too clever for their own good, intermittents work great on my Subaru and wouldn't want the rain sensor feature if that's the best it does.

The new Toyota Corolla (you know - the hottest one eva) has rain sensing wipers - and that's a $30K car.

Seems funny that opinions are so divided, seems some have no probs and others have lots of probs. It seems to me that for there to be so many people that have problems there must be some sort of fault with those specific vehicles. I wonder if there are any common factors, i.e. a certain year model, a specific production plant that produced the vehicles that have the problem etc. etc.

                          Cheers
