Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Longevity of these engine is not in question Jamie, given they are well cared for. Major concerns on 100,000 km's+ would be the AC and DSG gearbox. The R32 is very special in the sense that it's the last time Volkswagen will be putting a VR6 engine in their Golf's. A friend of mine is currently selling a very nice 5dr Black MKV R32 with 93,000 km's if interested. Please send me a PM and I will forward you the info needed.

The 08 is slightly different to the 07 with a couple of features, but nothing major. Quite a few out there with just standard features. Sunroof seems to be more common than Navigation from what I've seen. But luckily fitting and buying RCD510's & RNS510's are a relatively simple task.

If DSG test it in D (auto), (manual flapper mode) and S. If possible launch it as well to make sure there isn't any clutch slip. Make sure the clutches take up and put the power down.
DSG shouldn't thump or jerk when accelerating with ease.
(in saying that remember they are automated manual gear box's so when taking off it will take up like a normal clutch) the DSG will act differently from the GTI/R32 because of the torque factor.

Highly recommend a pre-purchase inspection on any car you are seriously interested in purchasing before you lay down the money.

    Servicing:

Minor servicing is at 15,000kms. Anywhere from $300-$600 depending on where you go. The dealerships are more expensive. Some people choose to do the oil at more regular intervals themselves. Major servicing is anywhere from $1200-$2000 depending on where you go. So far it has been a reasonable cost for my services, but I'm coming up to my 60,000 km service soon in 8000 km's.

    1) City Performance - Artarmon
    2) European Autotech - Mona Vale
    3) Exoticars - North Parramatta
    4) Beyond Limit Autos - Rydalmere

    Check points:

Front suspension top mounts - creaking steering at slow/no speed.
Oil changes done on time as per the book intervals
DSG - If the car has a DSG, try and pin point whether the DSG clutch slips when you accelerate.
Make sure the coil packs have been done (recall on the cars at a particular stage and a sticker should be on the door jam)
You want to be checking if it got serviced at the 60,000km point, and then at the relevant intervals.
Check the bolts that hold the front guards on if they have been removed(usually only removed if had accident).
Check door locks work correctly as it can be an expensive job to put right if out of warranty.

Best of luck with the decision, they are fantastic cars to drive and sound bloody awesome.

the R32 is a fantastic beastie and great fun to drive - so different to all the turbos because it has loads of low-down torque (and fantastic noise!!), rather than needing to be revved to perform!!

You may buy one and decide to harden it up a bit with some upgrades though, such as suspension, chipping & intake/exhaust..

        Sorry to hijack this thread.

I was wondering if you can elaborate more on the three points above?

Are the suspension top mounts known to give way? My extended warranty is running out next month and I noticed tonight a quite knocking noise in the front when I was turning to park the car......then I read this thread and wondering if related.

        Were all coil packs recalled?

Front guards as in the front bumper of the wheel guard?

        Thanks!
