I'm actually considering highly AAMI because they include signwriting rebates - if you have commercial signage on your car they contribute $500 towards it's replacement - which NOBODY else has.....I know they've had their knockers (so to speak), but have the best price around - AND rating 1 for life
You have no idea what it's like putting a claim through AAMI, without a doubt it's one of the worst experiences ever and if you feel that you can handle the hassles of that and having to take the car back time and time again for glaring errors and have to argue with management about the poor quality of the work than by all means go ahead.
If you don't care about the quality of the cars repair (and I assume you do or your would have purchased a korean car) and don't care if the cheapest quote gets the job than yes they are cheap and their customer service is really good (until you have problems with claims). My wifes car is with AAMI and she wants to stay with them for the time being as they have loans cars and the valet service and so forth. As her car is an old corolla I'm happy for her to stick with AAMI but when we upgrade her car AAMI will be gone for good.
Do a search on this forum and golfmkv.com and you'll see how many people have had problems with AAMI including the GTI that a AAMI approved repairer wrote off when he literally damaged every panel on the car and damaged trim etc on what should have been a straight forward $10,000 (or somewhere around that) repair. The owner was without a car for nearly 4 months when it was finally written off as uneconomical to repair.
I've had a number of claims through them and the last one was the worst with the car going back around 6 times and it still wasn't correct after all of that. When you have a manager at AAMI arguing with you and claiming that the rear window on a Subuaru Outback came from the factory sticking out 20+mm proud of the panel and claiming that you wouldn't have noticed it you really have to wonder why you're insured with them.
AAMI were half the price for me compared to any other insurer, with listed mods and rating one for life, despite some pretty serious marks on my record.
As for claims I didnt have a issue when i got something fixed, but it was a very simple issue so I wouldnt expect there to be a problem. Have heard horror stories about them but I'm sure they exist with the majority of insurers.
Insurers strike me like banks, they're all bastards, so it's pick the least worst.
Oddly enough I've had a few claims with AAMI over the years and the work, process and end result have been exceptional every time. My last prang in my BA GT actually came back with better panel alignment than new, but given Fords idea of quality, that's a pretty low benchmark! Oh and I worked for a year as a panel beater apprentice, so I have some idea of what to look for, and was very impressed with the entire process.
There's no perfect choice, but give me humans to talk to thanks very much, and WOW in this country too!!!
