Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • DRL/LEDs options for mkv

    Hi vwc brainstrust,

I was wondering if anyone has come across any Daylight running lights or LED light options for the upper part of the lower left+right grills/vents (outlined in red), for a mkv jetta/golf. Most of the options I've seen are mounted low in the grill, but I'm looking for something that would mount specifically in that slot. Better yet, if it were a stick-on or not so deep that I would have to cut through (don't mind if I have to, but would prefer not to).

are you just tightening them up against the slats?
also, how are you wiring them up, are you using a relay that opens the contacts when you turn on the headlights?

Thanks for all your examples epigoo, ian, Gigitt, but that's what I don't want to do.
I'll try and get some pics up tomorrow of my reason why.
Is there any reason why none of you installed the lights in the upper most slot? Would it be possible to do so?

Here's something I found that's sort of what I'm after, except this isn't DRL and is only a simple system that works when you turn on your lights. The DRL I'm hoping to get comes on when your engine is running, but dims/go off when your headlights come on.

No I wired them into the ignition so when I turn the key they come on. I just drilled 4 /10 mil holes and bolted them up, there is a excessory wire in the headlight ,that's what I used been working now for over 2 years with no trouble .

                    thanks for the info ian
i wired some led's in my son's mk4 bora, but fed a wire all the way to the dash, then found an accessory wire. the come on with the ignition and stay on, which i believe is illegal. my other son want's them now on his mk5 gti, so hope to find a normally closed relay

Guys, you're going about hooking them up all wrong. See the following link and have a read how they work. Much easier. This is what ive got and works a treat.

There are plenty of drl lights on ebay. Dont bother with those long thin led's. They're not very bright at all.

I programmed the fogs as DRL set to 35% so they are not a glaring light and emit the lower end of lumens required for DRLs. They turn off with headlights as required by ADRs with the VW programming. I have the projector fogs and they are set to the correct dipping. If you use the standard fogs, they may still glare set at a low wattage.

I also got the Relay v8snerlo mentioned and it makes the wiring and connecting a breeze! I got a pair of 15cm LED DRL off ebay and mounted them on the fog surround lowest level trying to aim them forward and upwards. But imo 15cmx 1.5cm is a little on the small side compared to some of the OEM looking ones out there, so my advice would be to get something a little thicker and wider if possible (might mean more dremel work on the plastic though)

I had those originally but decided to change them as there were not very bright , ,but i'm quite happy with the brightness of the new ones .
