  • Brake cylinder reset tool

    Hey all.

Was planning on doing the rear brakes on the golf tomorrow before I do any Uni work . But I just read that you need a tool to reset the brakes by turning them?

Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of where I can get one of these and an idea of what it should cost?

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot, couldn't work out where to post this. Cheers

    Hey mate

I've seen them on eBay ranging from $30 for 2 sizes to a 24 piece for around $80 delivered. Look up "brake caliper tool"

Doesn't help if you need it today though.

Sprint Autoparts is open 7 days.

How did you go with the boost issue?

I'll drop by sprints later. See if they have anything.

Boost issue was related to a 90degree pipe which had a split on the bend. All sorted now. Must not be a common issue as I had to wait for the part from Melbourne.

Hey transporter. Quick question. Do the calipers just need to be twisted in or are do they need to be pushed and twisted?

I'd say it's common enough to even have one in the country.

Dealers don't stock much besides service consumables. A lot won't even carry brake pads or rotors unless they're common.

Just get a G clamp, place the old pad over the piston and then place the g clamp on the pad and against the caliper and wind it in... This will press the piston back... Don't waste money on 'special' tools they aren't needed... Also don't forget to grease up the outer of the pads, the slides and the caliper brackets so they don't squeal and seize up.

Umm. In the mk5 if you do that they jamb up. U have to spin them clockwise while pushing them in. I have done regular brakes on other cars before no issues like u said.

But its a little different on these because of the way the handbrake works.

Does the Mk5 still have the 'prongs' so to speak where you insert the special tool in there and it spins the actual piston? Could have sworn I was still using a G clamp on them back in my day, haha.

Front calipers are push in piston. Rears, they must be rotated in.

rear brakes have the handbrake incorporated in the caliper.

                      Your method wont work.

You can fudge it with a g-clamp & multigrips but for the $20-$30 it will cost for the tool it isn't worth the pain & suffering.

Fair enough, been awhile since I've had a Mk5.

I needed this tool a could of weeks ago. I found a tool at AutoBarn that did it. I got an SP tools version of this (http://m.supercheapauto.com.au/Produ...on-Tool/105532)

Pretty much you use a 3/8" wrench to apply pressure while turning the wrench and they compressed with ease.

The proper tool would have been awesome but this worked well and was easy to get.

That's basically what I ended up using. But that with pressure and a ratchet didn't seem to do the job. So I used this and a spanner to turn it. While slowly pushing with a regular brake piston compressing tool.

                            Hope that makes sens
