Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Eibach Pro-kit Springs

I see alot of people on here running coil over etc.
I dont really want to go as far as that however i am thinking of going for a set of Eibach Pro-kit springs with the std shocks. I will also do the rear sway bar.

Has anyone got this set up and how is it. All my searching has only found reviews of coil over setups.

According to the Eibach info it will lower my car 30mm which i think will be fine with 18's on it.

Also will the 30mm lowering effect the self levelling Bi-Xenons.??

I think that there is a large compromise in putting a lowering spring set in a car with std shocks.

The standard shocks are designed for the length of the standard spring. This is to give correct damping.

Lowering the car changes the point that the shock rides at and can cause excess rebounding or insufficient damping.

Get a cup kit, but buy some Koni adjustable shocks to match.

    Just my thoughts.

I've got H&R sport springs on my MKIV 2.0l sport. Front is 1.4 inches lower and rear is 1.5 inches lower. Still using standard shocks and no sway bars fitted either.
I fitted the springs last October, and they have settled in pretty good. The ride height is perfect and you can go over speedhumps no probs.
Little bit stiffer, but lots more fun around corners.
Eibach springs would probably give you the same effect.
I'll only change the shocks when they eventually wear out. I don't think you'll need coilovers, unless if you are intending on using your vehicle on the racetrack.

Logzy, although I'm running Koni FSD's with the prokit springs on my GT TDI, I was running prokit's with the factory shocks on my last two cars and I was more than pleased with the set up.

It's likely that fitting lowering springs will increase wear on the factory shocks, and it's true that lowering springs are best paired with sports shocks, but these sport type shocks invariably compromise the ride quality. This is where Koni FSD's come in - they significantly improve the handling, with little (if any) impact on the ride quality.

You may also want to consider Neuspeed springs (Ian from Rennenhaus sells them). I read a comparison on another forum where the guy rated the Neuspeed springs slightly above the Eibach's, due primarily to the superior ride quality. He did say however that the Eibach's provided slightly firmer and sharper cornering. He also mentioned that the Eibach's are noisy (due to 'spring slap' I think) when driving hard, but I've never experienced this, and I've pushed the car to the point where the tyres are starting to become quite audible if ya know what I mean.

Also, the Prokit springs will not lower your GT Sport by 30mm. The GT Sport is already 15mm lower than standard, so your car will only lower by around 15mm. Mine lowered 16mm at the front and only 10mm at the rear (this is apparently due to the FSD's, which can actually raise the rear on cars with factory springs).

Off Topic, but I have my colour coded Gti side skirts and rear bumper fitted. It looks great, but now the factory 17's look tiny, so now I need bigger rims! I'll post pics later in the week when I get back from Holiday.

Thanks for the info, most valuable.
I look forward to seeing some pics.

Sorry to revive this thread Logzy but I'm looking at lowering my GT as well. I've got prices on both Eibach, H&R, Pedders (eek) and I'm waiting on an email back from Rennhaus on the Neuspeed.I don't really want to go as far as coilovers so a set of 4 springs will do. I have been quoted supply& fit approx $950 for Eibach/H&R and $730 on Pedders.

Does anyone have feedback now on either of the above brands since it's been over 5 months since the last post? I would appreciate your comments
Traded: Tornado Red MY11 Golf GTI Adidas
Missus: MY17 VW Tiguan 140TDI R-Line, DAP, Tint, White.

Still no complaints here, the car handles like a Go-Kart, and is still a comfortable cruiser. You should be able to do better than $950 though. You can get Eibach's, Neuspeed or H&R from the US landed on your doorstep for about $400 - $450 (at least you could, not so sure now with the OZ dollar looking decidedly weaker than it was a few months back). Also, you should be able to find someone to fit them for around the $250 mark (I had shocks and springs fitted for $300).

Personally, I'd get the Neuspeed springs from Ian (about $460 from memory), as I don't think you would save a great deal atm by purchasing from overseas anyway. I have no experience with Pedders, and they may well be a quality spring, but (and this is pure speculation), I can't imagine they are of quite the same quality as the other 3 brands you are considering.
