Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 7 speed DSG Mechatronics unit

Anyone know the difference in the Mechatronics unit fitted as part of the voluntary recall of 7 speed DSG units, in my Jetta yesterday and that of the original unit fitted in 2009?
My understanding of the problem with the units is "electrolysis of the oil" (becoming conductive?) in the unit causing the computer circuit to short out . Cause of this being moisture absorbtion ?, corrosion of parts ?or breakdown of the surface of components (corrosion) of the material of the housing ? or any one or all of these?
I'd be very interested to hear what has been done; assuming VW aren't just replacing the original ones unchanged.
    New materials? Different oil?
Also does this DSG, the dry clutch, one run considerably hotter than its oil bathed cousins?
    Thanks in anticipation.................................

probably a combination of changes, but they have changed the oil used.
