  • All lights on when unlock car

Is there a way to turn this feature off, whenever I unlock the GTI, all tail lights, headlights, cabinet lights and even all the dash panel turned on for about 5 seconds, will this shorten the battery's life?

Can this be adjust to just a blinker flash same as you locking up the car ???

In the MFD, under lights, change the coming home and leaving home options.

I wouldn't worry about the battery life - the amount of power draw for the lights is minuscule compared to the starter-motor.

You can stop the headlights/taillights etc coming on by disabling 'coming home/leaving home' either by the MFD if you have the full height screen or Vag-Com/dealer if you have the half-height screen.

I am not sure about the interior lights but they only total about 50 watts so I wouldn't worry about it.

My car makes a pinging/beeping noise if you turn the engine off and have your headlights on. But I mostly just leave the lights in the auto position.

And isn't it illegal to drive with foglights on when the weather doesn't require them?

Mine (07 Jetta) only does the ping for parking lights (either both lights via the normal switch or one light via the indicator stalk). Headlights in 'auto' or 'headlights on' turn off after a while automagically.

Regarding fogs when not foggy, I believe the law refers to 'dazzling lights' on when not necessary. Below are the relevant sections. I feel that people with fogs on all the time look stupid anyway. What I find annoying is rear-fogs on all the time. Excels are particularly bad with this although the light is down low so not that annoying. I see a lot of BMWs with them on at night when not foggy and the light is at eye level and almost painful.

Also, a driver driving during the day in fog, or other hazardous
weather conditions causing reduced visibility, may drive
without the headlights of the driver’s vehicle operating if the
vehicle is fitted with front fog lights and those lights are
operating effectively and are clearly visible.
The driver of a vehicle fitted with a rear fog light must not
operate the fog light unless the driver is driving in fog or other
hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility.
A driver must not use, or allow to be used, any light fitted to or
in the driver’s vehicle to dazzle, or in a way that is likely to
              dazzle, another road user.

Its the W#$ker light. People must feel safer or something if they have the rear fog light on when its not foggy.
I wish the police would start targeting this to stop the tools driving with it on as its quite dangerous when youre behind them as they are extremely bright..

In WA we have this law:

The driver of a vehicle fitted with a front or rear fog light shall not operate the front or the rear fog light unless the driver is driving in fog or other hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility.

                  Penalty: $100 Demerit Points: 1

I found out the hard way in my Subaru. For the record, I only ever had the front on, not the rear.

Someone once mentioned to me that the Hyundai Excel (#1 offender for rear foglight) switch is in a spot where it is easy to knock with your knee. I've never been in one so I can't confirm this. At least with the VWs it's not a simple operation to turn the fogs on so the chances of accidental operation is low.

Surely there is a dash indicator light for all cars with OEM fogs?

Never looked into the legalities of it. they arent that dazzling anyway, in fact quite disappointing how much light comes from them. I had a peugeot 306 with them and by habit i drove with them on at night as i grew up in ireland where they helped illuminate the side of the road.

I have very rarely seen fog in melbourne, agreed that excels are bad, i once got out at a set up light and politely asked the driver to turn it of (after a few beers of course).

I always wondered why Ecxel drivers put their rear fogs on. You know enough just by looking at the car to steer clear anyway.

                        No there isn't.

I think it should be a mandatory design requirement that when the headlights are turned off the front and rear foglights should be automatically turned off (a bit like a Golf really!).

Unless its really sunny i drive with my foglights on all the time... coz for some reason they gave me the wrong paint color when i ordered the car... i didn't realise that "invisible" was an option but apparently i have ticked that box when ordering the car.. coz most f*%#ers out there dont give way to me!

I have seen some fog lights in commodores that were "dazzling" to oncoming traffic... wondered why since they were obvious standard equipment on that model.. but talking to a guy i work with (who is right into hsv's etc) he said that it was actually common for the fog lights to be installed incorrectly in commodores (there is a left and right) if they put the left one in the right side it actually points it upwards so it will point straight into oncoming traffic.

The other good one is to leave your indicator on when you park. From memory the parking light on the side your indicating too will stay on and you'll get the light pinging noise when you have the door open. Does it in the MkIV as well. Took me a while to work out what the hell was going on.

So that's why so many recent dunnydores have dazzling foglights. I thought they were just adjusting them up as high as possible to try to get illumination further ahead. I find it really irritating, particularly when it isn't at all foggy.

If someone comes up behind me and their foglights are all a-dazzle I have been known to turn my (very bright and irritating) rear fog light on until they get past. I know two wrongs don't make a right, but it is somehow satisfying to share the pain
