Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

my son has jus bought a mk5 gti and typically want to make it to sound a bit better. all the post seem to suggest removing the resonator. i suspect they are straight thru, so wouldn't replacing the rear muffler be better as well as letting it breather a bit better?

    cheers

Removing the resonator will make a significant difference to the noise level if that's what he's looking for.

Don't remove the resonator, it'll drone and sound terrible. I've heard a couple in person. Get a 3" Downpipe from the likes of SPM, APR, VIEZU, etc and you'll enjoy extra noise without legalities. You will require a re-tune to remove a CEL as the car will get cranky. Most tuning companies will package deal a Tune and a Downpipe.

A Downpipe will help low-end torque, product more power with the added noise.

If he just wants noise, no tune, and no extra power, then get a Cat-Back. It'll be louder than the Downpipe and it's simply a noise thing.

with the resonator, that's what i thought, yet it seems to be a common mod. i'll tell the son to save and do it properly(dump pipe and tune)

Yes spend the money on a proper exhaust system otherwise you end up with a really noisy car which is a pain to drive - preferably with a resonator.
