  • R32 test drive - Can't stop smiling...

Took an R32 for a test drive today through the Adelaide Hills with my wife.

    Couldn't fault the car.

    Cant' stop smiling...

DSG is sensational, and the car was gripping in the corners like baby **** to a blanket.

    Amazing.

    Lost for words.

        Rogue has an itch...
        ...can it be scratched?

I've yet to try an R32 and I'm jealous!

Stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment...

Can't afford a brand new model, but scouring the countryside for a decent second hand DSG model at the moment...

Not too many around, so have to keep my eyes open.......

Put a "wanted" advert in the classifieds. Often stirs those who have been thinking of selling, but havent yet got round to it

have you tried the MK4 R32? there is no DSG, but i think its a bit better than the MK5. It sounds better, that is for sure. I might be biased though

^Pfft. Everyone knows the second generation of a car is the one to get. They've fixed all the problems of the first while keeping all the good bits and adding some improvements... like more power and handling more suited to a daily driver. That, and everyone saw the test on top-gear putting the new R 3 solid seconds faster around their test track than the old R. Oh, but that's right... it's all down to the new stig

MK5 is a good car, no doubt, but anyone who has driven both has said that the MK4 is a better car. Its almost unique as well, so even now you can find an MK5 for 46-47k, same as a 3 year older car. I wonder why...? If you haven't driven the MK4, dont talk about it, its not what it looks like

the golf 5 has a much stiffer chassis though. but even so id prefer an mk4 r32 much more than a mk5. plus you can pick one up for high 30's these days. oh and then you get the unique factor and hte mk4 looks heaps better.

Agreed, very happy with the DSG.

I have driven a Mk4 R some time ago. It was a very very cruel tease, as i couldn't afford one at the time. Now, being that work pays for the car, i opted for a new model with warranty yadda yadda yadda.

I agree with the popular opinion that the drive is much more raw in the original R. As a daily driver, i think it'd start to bug me. The raw drive in the original doesn't make it any quicker, though. What gives with that? Maybe on a smooth European track it'd be spades over the Mk5, but again... i need a daily drive that engages me on the weekend, not a race car. IMO, they're both great cars and are both worth the asking price. I've yet to find any brand enthusiast that doesn't claim the old model - particualrly if they own one - is better than the new model.

In most cases, both models of the car hold different merits but the same ability to make an engaging drive and leave the owner with a massive smile on their face. Is there any other reason to buy a good car? That being said, is there really any point to dragging up inane arguements about which is better? I mean, if VW were still pushing the Mk4 Golf out the door of the factory, there's a 99% chance they'd be about to go bankrupt... just the same as they need to make a Mk6. Would you rather boast that you own the worlds best Golf as they never made another after it, or boast that you own a car from one of the worlds most respected manufacturers?
