Indicators flashing the wrong way

I noticed my 06 GTI is doing an odd thing lately with its indicators, it only happens sometimes when say I am indicating right my left indicator will flash quickly first, its usually not a full indicator flash just a quick flash and then returns to the right side. Something like this happened in my previous car (Audi A6) and eventually my indicators stopped work completely, it turned out to be the Hazard relay, which also controlled the direction of the indications. I wonder if this is something similar.

The flasher relays are likely to be the same part VW to Audi, so there's a very good chance it's the same problem

As its a mk5 they indicators are controlled via the onboard power supply ecu...no relay as such.....i would be thinking more on the lines of indicator stalk faulty...VDUB....
