  • Passat upright and lower control arm swap into a MK V Golf

    Hello,

Will be acquiring my 3rd Volkswagen on Thursday. A 2008 Golf TDI Pacific.

Been researching and it seems the stock items are cast iron and it's possible to do a swap them over with items from the passat as they're made of better materials and lighter.

Has anyone here done it it though? And the approximate cost.

    Thanks.

I replaced my LCA with Superpro and fitted the Passat upright(knuckle). You will need to get the correct nuts and not use the ones on the car as the need the wide base for the tie rod and ball joint. The CV bolts also need to be replaced as they are also a single use item and stretch when fitted. They are not easy to remove and need a 24mm 12 point socket. I used a kincrome 1/2" bent bar and extension to remove the bolts with a one metre water-pipe bar. I rested the outside on a floor stand to support it as I pressed down to loosen it. Follow the EKTA instructions and all should be good. If your car has the smaller brakes, the uprights are a no go. If you are going to do at least the LCA, get the Tyrolsport front end locating kit to tie everything up. Any unsprung dieting is good, also check the wheels you buy to ensure they are nice and light. Anything under 20 pounds in an 18" will be OK and different tyre brands and models can have a few pounds difference.
