  • Thinking of buying a Golf GTI

I am thinking of buying a GTI. And would like to know what issues they have if any. most of the used one have 80,000+

At the moment I drive a FSI golf and I was stung with that as I didn't get the car checked out properly!

If buying second hand you might do well to avoid the dsg

Except if it's just been replaced, like mine. Then it's like buying a brand new car as far as the transmission is concerned.

Mine has just under 50,000k and 11 months Allianz warranty left, but not selling yet.

My 06 gti is approaching 140k and it's been fairly trouble free, just the usual wear and tear items apart from cv boots and engine mounts. Timing belt and water pump are the big ticket service items...

Used car review in the Fairfax press re: Mark V GTI...

Also an interesting take on (6 speed at least) DSG failures.

I didn't think it was a good read at all - I thought it was a puff piece from someone who asked people to write in if they have had 'experiences to share'.
And I am not just saying that because my GTi with 101k on the clock is for sale.
Where does the 100k come from? His ar$e is where... A bearing in the mech? I haven't heard of that one before. Happy to see his source cited... Ditto with reconditioned mechatronics.
Most of the DSG failures don't seem to have anything in common - lower or higher k's - highway, track or traffic driving. The failures on the 6speed DSG - which are actually not that common for the number of them out there - seem to be fairly random.

I agree - the article is definitely a bit of a "pluck thoughts from the air and publish them as facts" piece.

100k for DSG failure is inventive and wrong. Oil burning is a characteristic but mine seems now to have stopped since 40ks.

Most 6 speed DSG failures are the mechatronics units, and they can become troublesome at far less than 100k, or no trouble at 150k.
I have personal experience of mechatronics troubles at less than 3 years and 30ks, whereas recently I chatted with a 2006 GTI owner who had more than 150k up and the DSG is still trouble free.

I have been looking for a replacement for the GTI as its now 5 years, but for the life of me I can't find anything that's a quantum improvement over the MKV to entice me. I still break out in a broad grin when I can find a bit of road to prod the throttle a bit

Next car will be AWD, though - the biggest problem with the GTI is lack of traction. Even without a chip the wheelspin is crazy.

Maybe the new A45 AMG Merc when it gets here?? But I've sat in the A class and find the headroom lacking, which would still be a factor in the A45.

Hmm, V8 diesel Touareg???? No headroom problems, no DSG problems, a good old torque converter launch feel, but getting a bit bit pricey...
