RCD 500 security code

Hi guys,

I'm venturing away from the mk3 forum (scary!). This has probably been answered before but I'm trying to sell and RCD500 headunit that came out of my dads GTI because he put in an aftermarket sat nav. The car was sold 2 years ago so we don't have any manuals leftover. How do I go about getting the security code for it? We have some old rego papers with the VIN, will we need that? Or is it just a matter of giving the dealer a ring??

Perhaps ring and quote the Vin but dont say you have sold it. Just say you have removed it and want to sell it and cant remember the code

You shouldn't need to fabricate any stories, but it might grease the wheels, per se.

Phone them up with the VIN, and the serial number off it (Starts with VWZ).

I took two headunits (RCD500 + RCD510) to my local dealer. 10 mins later, i had both the codes at no cost.

The bastards don't want to give it to me. Wanted 70 Bucks. I've sold the car and they're saying they dont want to give me the code if I don't have it. Gonna try with some old rego papers and see how that goes.

Hey mate, I only have some old rego papers and the VIN It was a company car that dad bought off them after leasing it and then sold it off in 2011. I'm guessing the VIN isn't enough? Appreciate the help though. WIll have another dig and see if I can find the serial

Serial number is on the unit itself.

Starts with VWZ. It's about 14 characters long, from memory.
