  • Did it, now just have to wait till May/June.

    Hi everyone.

Today was a very important day, for today was the day that I ordered and paid deposit for my future car: the GTI.

    ---------------------begin excited rant--------------------------

After much browsing and learning through this and many other forums I decided on a 3 door white GTI with manual, xenons, dead cow and rear sensors. The decision making process was quite agonizing, especially when it came to the DSG vs Manual debate. In the end, I decided to go with manual because I want to keep the car for more than 5 years (extent of extended warranty) and there are too many DSG horror stories floating around. Worse comes to worst, at least the manual box won't cost as much to fix if it dies after warranty runs out.

I am still agonizing whether I want to get the new SATNAV and bluetooth factory fitted or retrofit it at a later date. It would blow the car out of the intended price range by a few Ks but its so much more convenient having it fitted now... arrrgh...

The dealer I went through was Josh at Ian Boettcher motors. They were extremely helpful, polite to a fault and really looked after me. Have anyone else dealt with them before?

    ----------------------end excited rant----------------------------

    And now the waiting begins..

Steve, I just looked through the brochure and I stand corrected. It is GTI.

Thanks Phaeton, I sure hope the real thing would look as sexy as they do in photos...

Mark, there is a discussion about DSG in the Eos section of the forum. Someone there also provided a link to an UK discussion where they talked about the units failing dramatically on freeways etc. Finally, my next door neighbor bought an M5 a while back and had his SMG (which is another sequential manual transmission) fail after just 3 months. I did test drive the DSG and it is a great system. However, as I am planning on keeping the car for more than 5 years, I really don't want to fork out the repair bill for a DSG box outside of warranty.

On the bluetooth note, I really am not sure. Maybe I should call him up and find out....

We've had absolutely no problems with the DSG box in our GTI. Fast, reliable, predictable, and it hasn't cost anything to maintain. I guess it's the same story as always... you hear from the people who have problems, and rarely hear from the many more people without a problem.

A friend has a black Golf GTI, and white is definitely the better colour... the only possible competition comes from either United Grey or Shadow Blue. I'm biased, though... I'd buy anything from a GTI to a Ferrari F430 in white!

The wait is worth it... they're a brilliant little car. If I didn't need something bigger, it's the only car I'd ever need. We had a similar wait for ours... ordered in January and arrived in June. I have an even longer wait now for the R36 and it's driving me nuts!

if u want satnav do it now. Otherwise it will cost you a lot more to retrofit.
But yeah congrats. I have a 3 door candy white. welcome to the club

I also purchased from Ian Boettcher Motors - great advice. good price and I hear the servicing is impressive. Only fair dinkum dealer in SEQ in my opinion - the other two just pretend to sell VWs.

I'm with you in regard to the manual vs DSG. I once helped take apart a pre-selector gearbox from the 1930s - that was 20 years ago and I still have nightmares!

FirstlyWhat does a M5 sequential box have to do with the VW DSG.??
Thats like saying a mate had an auto fail in a ford, dont by any auto trans car.

Im sure you will hear of some DSG problems as millions of these things have been used in VW's, AUDI's, SKODA's, etc. Its really no cause for alarm the way i see it.

The service is impressive. They will drive a replacement car to your place, swap it with your vehicle so you will have something to drive, then bring your car back once the service is done.

Logzy, I don't understand the nitty gritty details about DSG and SMG. But from the research I did it seems that they operate on similar principles? Like I said, the DSG is an impressive piece of machinery and I had a blast while test driving it and paddle shifting. The reason that I decided against it in the end really came down to the warranty period. $1Xk of replacement costs out of warranty really doesn't sound that attractive...

BTW, were you able to hook the skoda bluetooth module up yet? How well is that working? Did you need to run a separate aerial in for that? I checked with Josh and the BT module aussie dealers have right now are all dealer fitted non-premium bluetooth. So I am looking at fitting the skoda module in later and just getting the RNS-510 now.

Not yet, I'm really not a true dubber yet, just a dreamer. Still waiting for my car, not due till mid march (see below), just collecting things to fit to it once i pick it up.
The BT module has no external antenna for the phone signal. It only has an antenna connection for the bluetooth antenna which came with the kit.

The wait is that long that I've run out of things to learn about from reading everything 20 times over on the net.
I'm about to order my VAG COM too, then that will **** me not being able to play with it.
