Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf 2.0 TDI won't start

    Hi folks
My Golf suddenly decided it wasn't going to start any more, and I'm wondering if this is a "known" problem. The battery is good (recently installed Bosch) and all the electrics seem fine. When the key is turned on all the dash warning lights illuminate, then switch off as normal, but when the key is turned to the start position there is nothing - no sound, no "click" nothing. The transmission is manual, so I resorted to a push start and she fired up and drove home just fine, but still won't respond to the key. I have searched the Owners Manual for a fuse relating to starting, but can find nothing - is there a fuse somewhere in the start circuit? Failing that, is it likely to be starter motor or solenoid and where is the best place to start looking? Car has done about 100K clicks and has been regularly serviced.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

Could be a starter but diagnosing it over the internet is unreliable. You would be better having it looked at by someone.

1+ for the starter motor on that model...ignition switch is usually ok...need to find someone to check if there is 12 volts perm feed and 12 volts on the igniter wire to the starter motor on cranking....VDUB...

All good advice here as usual, just take it to your mechanic and save time and inconvenience. Think about what happens, if it stalls and you couldn't push start it?
