• MKV R32 Xenons didn't "pop back up"

Gday all,

My wifey's R32 xenons didn't 'pop back up' a couple of nights ago upon startup. When the car turns on, it usually does this point down then point back up sequence as part of the self levelling function.

I do have a VAGCOM cable but I thought, look, it's under warrantly, let's see what the boys at VW say.

So the wifey brings the car in and they blame it on the DRL lights I installed well over a year ago. Bear in mind that I installed the DRLs into a spare circuit which had nothing to do with headlights. They unplugged my DRLs and yes the Xenons worked again......but.....

Low and behold......the lights didn't point back up again tonight and the DRLs aren't plugged in.

I'll plug in the VAGCOM tomorrow but just wondering if anyone's had this issue before? I read up on another site overseas it may be the servo motor?

Cheers.

Use the cable to scan for errors. Should always do that before approaching a dealer.

They will use most things to get out of doing warranty repairs, but it does sound like the DRL's caused an issue to begin with. Could be the auto leveling system though.

It will be a fault anywhere in the xenon system...as a default if there is a error it puts them to the lowest setting so it does not go too high and blind oncoming drivers.....VCDS scan will show either a level sensor issue or control unit data error....VDUB...

Thanks guys. I'll do the scan.

The latest is they are trying to blame the drls causing a short..................but the thing is, they work again intermittently so I would have thought if the DRLs stuff up the system in any way, they wouldn't work all the time, not just once in a while?

Ok, have some good news, they didn't clear the codes when the car was brought in as when I just did the scan, there was a once off error for something else 4000kms ago.

Um, may be a funny question but would VW be in a position to say that I shouldn't be using a VAGCOM cable and any issue could have been caused by me and void warranty?

I took a video showing the lights currently do pop down and up again (therefore showing they do work sometimes and providing the argument that if my DRLs caused them to fail, why would it still work).

Here are the errors in scan (first one seems to be climatronic related and the one at the bottom alarm related?):

MKV R32 Xenons didn't "pop back up"

Save vcdc codes
Clear VCDS codes
Unplug both headlight harness and plug back in. Reseat the terminals.
Test

May also want to look at LHS rear wheel leveling sensor and if there is a connector unplug it then plug it back in.

Sound stupid, but sometimes it just the connection needing pulling apart and back together a few times just the clean the terminals.

Thanks Gigitt for the advice.

As the car is still a number of months away from having it's extended warranty expiring, I'll see what the dealer will do first (and avoid excuses not to cover it under warranty).
