Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MkV Sportline 6speed auto....problems, of course.

Have the above Golf, 2.0L FSI. 110,000km on clock.
The auto has decided to crap itself by banging and crashing from 1st to 2nd and back again while in stop-start traffic conditions, not in the higher gears or while under load. I'm told its valve assembly by a respected VW shop here in Melb., apparently a $3500 fix.....gulp! A VW dealership I phoned disagreed and said "it could be any number of things, bring it in and we'll take a look" Has anyone out there heard of this wonderful problem? Also, about the same time, the hatch badge/handle has decided to stop working, an electronic thing of course, which I don't hold against VW, these things just happen, BUT the auto problem leaves a bad taste, after all its only done 110,000kms.
Any VW owners out there who can enlighten me?

yes on that gearbox the valve body packs up..some autotrans places can recondition them if they have the correct equipment...vw dealers will replace it for a exchange unit...VDUB...

This is a known issue on the 6-speed tiptronic transmissions, and unfortunately it's too common.

i'd suggest you get dealer to diagnose & have them approach VW AU before commencing work to subsidise the repair as you'd expect a properly serviced transmission to last a bit more than 110,000km.

I assume your vehicle has full service history?

FSI Sportline is a conventional automatic isn't it? Are they sealed for life or do they have a maintenance regime?

Thanks for replys guys........think its a sealed for life tranny, and yes its been fully serviced thru its life. Like the idea of approaching the dealer where we bought the car new( Barloworld Glen Waverley) and see if they will be nice about subsidising to some extent for repairs. We've bought 2 new cars of them ( 2010 CC). I have a company and also bought my main man a company Mk VI Golf GTI., so VW should like me....or else.

My 2005 Sportline had the same issue, total repair (valve body etc) cost was $4700, the warranty company covered $1300, the rest was out of my pocket.

I did approach VW about it but as I'd been instructed by the warranty company to take it to a specialist rather than VW they couldn't help.

            Still love my Sportline

the problems i read on this forum, is what people usually expect of a ford falcon's build quality

its pretty disheartening to hear these issues coming from a "quality" badge

You're meant to drop the pan off and replace the oil and filter every 60,000kms in these transmissions, or they will go bang.

So pretty much the same service regime for conventional torque converter autos & DSGs?

                    Correct.

VGA circulated a bulletin within the delaership network a few years back saying so.

...the VW shop I go to here in Melb. also commented that VW should of made this problem a recall, as it became widely known as a fault in the product, not exceptable wear and tear. They also said its a Jap box, Aisin I think he said. VW's as well as probably every other brand, source parts from all over, don't think everything is made in-house. I believe DSG boxes are the same, ie not actually made by VW.

there is another issue with the trans oil making its way through the wiring harness and causing issues, be sure to check that also, much cheaper repair if it is. And yes Ive seen people replace valve bodies and not check this only to end up with the same problems.

After my repairs I was told it should be done annually by the repairer (transmission oil change).

                            Depends on usage, I guess.

The Aisin TF-60SN 6-speed automatic gearbox (known internally in VW as the "09G" when attached to a Golf) does not have a oil change interval, except for countries with a "hot climate", when it should be changed every 60 000 km.

To my understanding, the issue was that Australia was not classified as a country with a "hot climate" until later on (go figure) as Umai explained with the (rather late) bulletin issue.

So you have all these gearboxes that are running around on spent ATF that has never been changed because they merely followed the book, which probably made no mention of any drain interval.

Perceived quality does not equate to mechanical quality.
