Hi all, just installed a new RCD 510 from e bay into my MK5 what a headache with battery drainage unknown to me at the time, should have researched first. Anyway all good now had a updated gateway installed that recconised the unit now it shuts down.

Hey, out of interest which unit did you replace in your car? I'm looking to do the same thing. How did you upgrade the "gateway"? I can't really seem to find a definitive answer around nor how much it set you back $$-wise.

think its only the 2007 and older that need the gateway change..mine is 2008 and RCD510 has no issues at all..VDUB....

the CAN gateway. It's one of the brain pieces of the car, but like vdubmotorworx says, your car will only need it if it is an MY07 (built early in 2007) or earlier. Keep in mind if this needs to be changed out you will need to find someone with a VAGCOM because it will need to be reprogrammed before things will work again.

Best bet for getting one, is eBay, they will be overseas however and shipping will take a bit, the other option is to watch out for cars being wrecked, you can usually find a CAN gateway that will be suitable.

From memory I got mine for $80 from someone on the forums who was wrecking a couple of Golf's.

The CAN gateway needs to be revision K or better. And before everyone says it must be L or better, I have run an RCD with the revision K and there was no problem with battery drain. You can also get the CAN gateway reprogrammed (see here). Comes down to cost as to which road you choose to go down. Or you could go to my-gti.com and search there.

Hi, I replaced a RCD 500 mp3 with a RCD 510 and had to replace the gateway, I found a chap on e-bay in Sydney that sold them and installed with re-coding and so far all works fine. Also i asked if you can get the existing one re programmed he said no as the model and car features are not listed, he showed me this as he took a snapshot of the old settings and showed me the new one with a lot more features available.

I want to install a RCD510 in my 07 Jetta. Where abouts is the can gateway so I can identify the model?

The CAN Gateway will probably be hiding up under the dash on the drivers side of the car, it will be easier to get someone with a VCDS to scan it and see what revision it is, apart from that if you can find out the manufacture date of your Jetta we should be able to work out roughly whether or not the CAN gateway needs to be replaced.

There should be a sticker in the boot under the floor which has a list of codes which should have a date or the compliance plates under the bonnet in the engine bay should have a manufacture date for the car.

Thanks mate. Feb 07 is the manufacture date of my car.

That would make it an MY07, which as far as I am aware would need the newer CAN gateway, as the fix for power drain I am pretty sure was implemented with the MY08 (built August 2007) cars.

But if you want to know for sure, get someone with a VCDS to scan your car, it will give the part number with the revision letter at the end. I would imagine some of the specialist VW mechanics would be able to do a scan and tell you what revision you have
