2008 Volkswagen GTI Tensioner timing belt noise - YouTube

Basically the exact noise as featured in the video above. I'm getting the car looked at later this week but I'm curious if anyone has had a similar issue, what it actually was and how if was resolved!

    Thanks in advance.

sounds more like the aux belt and tensioner noisy...best thing is to pull the aux belt off then run the engine..if the noise is still there then you know to look deeper in..timing belt etc but im sure thats just the aux belt tensioner or a dry roller...VDUB...

Noise from drive belts normally occur because of belt slip. A timing belt should not slip, otherwise you will have piston meeting valves.

As VDUB says, it could be other drive belts, or it could even be a belt tensioner idler. We take things for granted, but any bearing can fail for a whole lot of reasons.

Mine sounds something like that (not as pronounced though), and Jimmy (yes, the guru) said that when I do the timing belt I should do the water pump too.

          Interesting. Thanks for the replies.

I should also have mentioned that the sound is only prominent a cold start (i.e first start up of the day). Once the engine is warm it disappears...

Yep will be water pump, almost 100% guarantee that done enough for the exact same reason.

It's not the water pump, it's one of the timing belt idler rollers. How do I know - mine did it too.

The numnuts at Barloworld diagnosed a timing belt, so Allianz warranty for the job was rejected.

I took the car to Audvolks and James showed me the offending item on a counter top display of the actual parts taken from an Audi.

So, new pulleys, belt, tensioner, accessories belt and water pump were installed for a complete cure. Allianz then cheerfully paid for the water pump (small impellor crack), the buggered bearing/pulley and all the labour.

So the noise has gone, u got a new water pump in that fix so how do u know it wasn't that? Not sure how a timing belt gets diagnosed so numnuts sounds about right. When in there it's crazy not to change the lot anyway so to conclude when u get a squeak cold it's fair to say u do a timing belt job the way u should, kit plus water pump. Don't do that then u need your head looked.

I know it wasn't the water pump because the bearing in the pump was perfect, just a faint crack in the plastic impellor.

The small idler bearing, however, made a hell of a noise just spinning it by hand.

There was clear evidence of the small amount of grease that would have been in there having spun out past the seals which are no longer sealing. Considering that these poor little buggers spin at 4x engine speed means they do a lot of work in their assigned life of 105,000ks, and obviously in my case and many others it does not make it.

PS. I have the old parts that were taken out. For interest the timing belt, tensioner, second small idler pulley are in excellent condition.

Turns out it was just a noisy pulley. However, my timing belt and water pump are due soon so I'm just going to get done all done at once.

I think I have the same problem with my old Mk5 and after reading this feel a whole lot better. I've never replaced the water pump, wasn't aware of the need to do it with the timing belt which has been done at both 100000k intervals. I'll get it done on the next one though, which isn't too far away now.

It was making a hell of a racket previously, I replaced the DMF (which was cactus) expecting it to go way and alas it was still there when she was kicked in the guts.

I was doing 1000k's per week; my wife has been driving it for 2 months and hasn't managed that yet.

                        Hey Guys,

                        I have a similar issue.

Would it most likely be the belt itself or tensioner?

I originally thought it was the timing belt idler but now not so sure.

The sound is there when it is reasonably cold/wet, prominent when in neutral/idling or clutch is out (even when changing gears) and is audible on acceleration at low revs (<2000 rpm).

It has only happened half a dozen times but it annoys me :-/

Is it something I should worry about and have looked at or just put up with through the cold months?

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you

Try watching the tensioner and see if it is jumping around alot.
If it is the clutch pulley on the alternator is gone.
Mine went at around the same k's a yours and the sound was similar.

                              For those interested:

It was the clutch pulley (thank you!).

I also had the serpentine belt and idler replaced as they were original, happy to have got 10 years/160k out of them
