  • Weird things happening after battery removal!

So yesterday I fitted an R32 steering wheel to my car and I have had a couple of weird things happen since doing it.
First is the windows would not automatically go up and down by just pressing the switch.
I had to hold the switch up or down the whole time to get them up or down.
They have gone back to working automatically know.
The other thing that happened I will keep to myself for the moment as it only happened once but I have major concerns about it and it is making me sick in the gut thinking about it.
I'm just wondering whether after disconnecting the battery there is some sort of reset the car goes through?
Has anyone else had weird **** happen after disconnecting or replacing a battery?

The window switch thing is related to the battery being off, the window regulator motors need to have their basic settings redone, which you did.
However, without giving us any info we can't really help out with whatever is majorly concerning you, no need to be shy we are all firiends here, what's the issue?

Ok But I feel like i'm going to spew as I type this.
I had done around 50klm's since disconnecting the battery and this happened.
Pulled into a servo to get a drink and when I went to pull out it drove as normal but when it went to shift into second there was nothing,
like it went into neutral. Pulled off to the side of the road and came to a stop then tried to drive of again and it happened again. I did this
a few times and ended up having to reverse up a side street because I was in a prick of a position and shut it down, started it back up and it drove off perfectly.

Hmmmm, if it was me I would go get it checked, for peace of mind if nothing else, false neutrals or no gear selection is not nothing to worry about, regardless of how many gears your box has.

Basic set your windows, put them all the way up, hold the switch up untill you hear a 'click', put them all the way down hold the switch down till you hear a 'click' - they are basic set.

About the other issues, perhaps drive it for awhile and see if it happens again or wait for a light to come on so it can throw a code, if it was running fine before the battery removal I wouldn't be worrying about it... too much.

Bought VCDS today so I will have it tomorrow to scan it.

Scanned it and no fault codes with the gearbox.
So is this VCDS as good as any other program at finding faults or would I be better off
taking it to VW to get in scanned on what ever they use??
Coded the steering wheel and all is good there.

You have reset all the convenience settings ( in the MFD display ) back to stock, get into your convenience settings and re-tick the window options etc etc, just like you did when setting up the car from new. If the battery is disconnected long enough you also put the ECU and gearbox back into reset/learn mode, so they will often feel a bit weird till they relearn everything.

So it's possible the DSG brain fart was part of the reset/learn mode Greg?

One other thing is that you would have had to turn lock to lock to get rid of the steering error light. With the VCDS you can probably do more quicker than the dealer. Removing the battery will have given you some false errors in some modules. You can go through each one and check the error and delete them if they are of no concern. Brakes, engine and DSG shouldn't have generated errors so if there are any, pay some attention to them before you think about deleting them. One option is to do a full system scan and save the log before deleting them. Get a little note book and write all the long codings in it. When you get deep into changing the codes, you can always reenter a known working code. That being said, it normally wont let you do something too dangerous. There are some little fiddles to change things without instructions ass well. I have been able to activate the OPS and RVC on the RNS510 at he same time even I was told it cant be done and I also activated full circle brake lights with coding. Have fun playing

The turning the wheel from lock to lock didn't get rid of the steering error light in my case.
I tried it over and over again and the light just stayed on.
I ended up thinking **** it, I will take it for a drive around the block to check the alignment of the wheel.
As soon as I started reversing down the drive way it went out.

Yep that's all very normal after having the voltage disconnected for a while, even when your battery gets low the steering wheel temporary error on start is a common warning sign. It's all good.

Pretty sure it uses the ABS sensors to recalibrate the steering sensor, hence why you need a drive round the block.
