Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MKV GTI gremlins

Hope I have put this in the correct section, but I am in desperate need of some advice with my MKV GTI. It has some mega, intermittent issues that are driving me insane! I was thinking fuses but because they can not work, then next time car is on, they work. So no clue! earthing issues somewhere? If anyone has an earthing diagram map would be greatly appreciated. My headlights are on all the time the car is on, which is ok, had it plugged up once and it seems a hard fault so indicates that the switch is broken, I am getting round to replacing it, but have not had spare cash yet (i am disabled so on a small income and had heaps of bills lately!) It has started now, sometimes one headlight will go out like the bulb is gone (passenger side every time), yet the next time start the car, is working fine. twice now the demister does not work, last time it did not work the auto wipers did not work either, yet tonight, they worked as normal, yet no demist, so car fogged right up!!

it also had heaps of water in the spare tyre well, like heaps, all way down drivers side back seat, floor wet and foam under seat was soaked! ive had trim all out everywhere trying to find a leak but i cannot find where water could be coming in from! all seals/etc are nice and tight!

I am seriously getting to my whits end with this car. I love it to bits but this is all driving me insane! SO please if anyone has had similar issues, and can point me in the right direction with what to do with it, that would be fantastic!

    cheers, Leonie

Hi. I think this should have gone in the MkV subforum, but nonetheless.

On the water leaks: does the car have a sunroof? I had similar leaking issues with my Mk4, and it turned out to be the drain tubes which run from the sunroof channels, down the A pillars and out of the front door jamb. They were blocked with grit and just needed to be squeezed open and flushed with some water. I haven't had any water on the floor since.

Yeah i was not sure where to put it (so mods can move if I have put it in wrong section) But saw other similar queries in here. Yes i have a sunroof, however no water up front of car, its in spare tyre well, and back drivers side seat and that foot well. so am definitely baffled.
It has started making a loud strange noise when the heater is not working. has done it twice now which was lastnight. heater and demister not working at all, fan working as normal, but is like the vents do not open as no heat/air anything comes out with fans on and everything full ball.

Well heater is making a really weird noise now. Is anyone able to offer any advice? Please? I cannot afford to take it anywhere at the moment (disabled so do not bring in much!) Trying to fix what I can myself until tax time but all the wiring slowly seems to be doing freaky stuff! Right side of boot trim is also saturated again since all the recent rain, I had that trim out and could not find anywhere water is getting in. Am stumped!
