  • Car Wont Rev Above 3000 at Standstill

well as the title states... the good ol gt tdi wont rev above 3k while standing still (possibly only after its warm?). am i right in assuming the over-smart-and-annoying vw engineers think they know better what rpm i should be launching my car at? the needle goes straight to 3k and sits right on it with the foot flat on the floor... damn dbw

anyway anyone else noticed this? guess im coming across as a bit of a rev head but im not saying i would want to drop the clutch at 5000rpm but out of principle i dont want to be told i cant on my own car if that makes sense

Umm I think you are forgetting the fact that you drive a diesel. They are not a motor that is designed to be revved, all your useable torque and power comes in a specific rev range anything above that is useless. More than likely it wont rev above 3,000rpm so as not to blow it up, i think you need to readjust your thinking.. it is not a petrol motor.. just something to bear in mind and think about.

I'm pretty sure it's the launch control - you may want to try doing it with your foot off the break (in neutral of course) and see if it lets you rev past 3k then...?

Don't know if the Golf does it but alot of new cars do it - You can't rev a BA/BF Falcon above 3000 while in neutral!

i know diesels hate revving and i also know that after about 4000rpm the power drops off even though the redline is at 4500. just seems strange to me that they'd put that restriction on a manual. its also strange that it only happens after the car is warm.

thats in the auto though isnt it? if you try jamming it into drive right after revving it in neutral the tranny will probably fall out the bottom of the car

                Lol - Auto/manual same thing.

The 6 speed in the BF is the best traditional auto tranny in the world though, I wouldnt bag it!

I assume it WILL rev to more than 3000 when in gear?

Slightly OT, my TSI developed an engine fault the first day I had it (yellow engine light came on) and wouldn't rev over 3 grand IN or OUT of gear. A computer reset fixed it - apparently it was an A/C fault - but the dealer said that 3000 rpm was the Golf's limp home redline. Is 3000 VW's 'magic' number?

Mind you, aleast you don't have to go through all that ESP off, put into D &c palaver that the rest of us have to with LC

Not at all.. not quite ready to buy a Volvo!!! Diesel motors were never designed to be revved to the same extent of that of a petrol motor... the old saying of placing a wise head on young shoulders springs to mind here!

take your car out of park N and it should rev up to the max but once you have it in P it should lock to a rev limiter coz it does the same thing on DSG

                        damn 6spd man FTW

lol yes i have the 6sp manual.

it must just be the manual transmission's idea of launch control because its only when the car is in first with the clutch pushed in that it limits the revs to 3000

My time at Porsche found the same thing with the Cayenne. Software wont allow you to rev it passed 3000rpm. I would then reckon the Touereg is the same. Yeah they are getting sofisticated hey.
