  • GTI needs new injectors

My 2006 GTI DSG has had an uneven idol and a misfire on cylinder 2 for a few months now. Drives ok when warm but crappy when cold and on tick over.

Took it to VW Village who said it needs new injectors. Had another opinion on it and the carbon clean was mentioned. Decided to get that done in hope that it'd sort it.
The clean has improved mpg a bit and initially I noticed that it performed a bit better but the original issue was still there.

Still missing on cylinder 2 so back to the garage she goes. Had all electrics checked and narrowed down to either a valve not seating correctly or a faulty injector. Compression test showed valves were good and under further inspection was told the injector is leaking.

Now what's confusing me is they're saying to replace all 4 seen as the labor is quite intensive and makes sense as if ones gone, other could too. Apparently they do them all the time and its a common issue. Is it? Has anyone else had to replace injectors on a car with only 90k on the clock?

I've also been told from another source not to change all 4 as this is uncommon and highly unlikely that another will fail.

Now I'm confused. Just wondered if anyone else has had the same issue?

    Cheers

Question is how could one cylinder misfiring be associated with another??
Beats the hell out of me!!!
If one injector is faulty or blocked how could it effect the other if no faults are present in any if the others. I believe your told to change them all as a precaution in case it happens to another. Good topic we need more opinions.

Its a bit of work, but no reason to spend hundreds more. Spark plugs you replace them all, injectors, seems a bit excessive.

      How many K's?

Exactly! They're advising to change as a precaution and the fact that the labor is the same so may as well do all 4. Thing is they ain't cheap so it kinda doubles the bill.
I'm definitely thinking i just get the one faulty leaking injector changed but just interested in other opinions.

You're right, especially when just 2 moths ago they were all cleaned. Cars got 92k on the clock.

its just a recommendation for all 4.. some times you do a job like that and change one then 2 weeks later its fails another then you get one angry customer that thinks you should have changed them all as now they have the labour charge again..... its like coil packs... when they started going faulty you replaced the faulty one and all good but the next week it would be back with a angry customer saying its doing the same and that you didnt fix the issue in the first place but actually its another cylinder coil thats gone... so then after two unwanted trips to the dealer the others are replaced... really its up to you but with injectors usually its just one that goes...VDUB..

              Spot on.

Also FYI this is not a common issue on Mk5's, I've seen afew lurking around on the Mk6 GTI's, but not MK5's.. Yeah they say replace all 4, but in actual fact only 1 is faulty, the rest could go, or they couldn't, you don't know it all just depends how much $ you want to spend. To put this in perspective for you, if this car was under warranty and getting warranty work from the DEALER, VGA would make the dealer
test the injectors, find the faulty one, send a DISS ticket and technical would tell them to only renew the faulty injector/s. Your choice buddy, personally I'd only do the one considering the low KM's on your car, plus the fact I do the labour myself so not a worry for me..

Please refer to my comments on another mk5 thread regarding misfire when cold, few things explained there, injectors will fix it but itll eventually come back, carbon is the killer. Try and fit an injector, pain in the date. you got it all apart anyway I would be having the carbon cleaned out to avoid the reoccurring issue and only then good chance 1 will fix it, if you don't fit all 4 as you are in there anyway, yep tricky and up to each individual. Could be worse could be a 2.0 TDI at $900 each. Gti around $300 or so each

Just had the intake stripped and the full carbon clean done 2 months ago so I'm hoping by just replacing the faulty injector all should be good. Just one of those things I guess. If I do all 4 you can bet your life I'd be throwing 3 good ones away. Just do one and another will go in a couple of weeks!

Slightly of topic but here's a question to all out there. Person i know go's to dealer with performance issue. is told nothing wrong. Returns 2 weeks later is told fuel is bad fuel is replaced and filter changed. Returns 1 week later is told to replace all injectors. Now question is how well should the fuel filter protect the injectors? How can it be suspected that all injectors are faulty?

Well I've had the faulty injector replaced, and a couple of o rings installed that were missing (whatever they were) and according to the mechanic she's purring like a baby.
Pick it up tomorrow so fingers crossed the issue is sorted.
