  • Battery replacement for Golf GTI MK5

After five good years of reliable service, my GTI is due for a battery replacement, the service centre noted that it has failed the test and I should monitor it and quoted approx $450 to replace. Noticing the starter struggling on cold mornings now.

So I was wondering where would be a good place to source a replacement battery and whether/if there are hop up options available, eg: dry cell? more capacity?

Any recommendations in Melbourne for batteries?

From what I remember, they old Varta's were around 580CCA. Now, most of the replacement batteries will be more like 650 to 700CCA with RC of 105.
Varta, Exide, Supercharge, plus a range of others, depends what you want to spend and what warranty they each offer, 1, 2 or 3 years. U can look at an optima, or Deka, do a search on here for peeps who may have installed these deep cycle batteries.

Jmac (Jimmy) hooked me up with a N66 replacement battery and installed it for not much more than a third of what you were quoted. Like I said, depends what you want.

Joe from Autoslick (or slickonline) got me a very well priced optima yellowtop for my old car. Paid less for it than you were quoted for a standard replacement. Going back a couple years now though.

Since then, I now run Supercharge in my 2 cars and my partners Swift, and none have let me down in the last 2 or 3 years.

I replaced the OEM battery in the TDI after six years with a Supercharge. Haven't had a problem, would even go as far as to say the car is starting better than when new!

Yeah that Supercharge one looks to be a good option hey. 36 month warranty too which is on par with the OEM Varta one. I hear Bosch S5 is a popular replacement choice for MKV's aswell, not really any cheaper than the Varta though

Looking at price for a battery for my wife's 2.0 TDI and noticed your thread.

Did you get a battery from Every Battery and if so, can you give me some details...Brand, price etc?

                Cheers.

                  Varta, 780cca, $250. Same as a Bosch.

Can't help with a supplier down there but google would know

Paid $700 at VW dealer under three years ago (and it had a one year warranty!), and just had new one fitted last week by RACV for $230 with three years warranty. They are also the VW Roadside Assist mechanics, so fully covered.

Lifetime warranty? I find that hard to believe.

I just replaced mine with an AC Delco S56318 580cca for $155 fitted. 30 months warranty.

That's just immoral to charge that much!

AFAIK, Bosch Gold are 24 months warranty.

LOLing at person that paid $700 for a battery.

                          I bought a Varta from Batteries Direct. 77Ah; 780cca; $250; 2yr full replacement warranty

Replaced original (Varta) battery in a 2006 2.0 TDi the other day. About 90000km on it. Reckon 8 years from a battery turning over a diesel engine is pretty good going. Given I was stranded and not able to shop around I ended up for the sheer convenience of it all going with NRMA - $250 fitted, old battery taken etc. If I get half the life out of this one compared to the Varta I will be happy, assuming I still own the car in 4 years time.

Just bought a Century Heavy Duty for $200 delivered. I think my battery is the original still and currently sounding like its on its way out on startup.. hasn't failed yet, but I don't want to wait for that day.
