  • R32 clunking noise - clueless girl! Sydney

    Hi,
I have a 2006 golf r32 (112,00kms) and its been making a clunking noise for the past month or so. Its more noticable inside the car than outside. It seems to happen when I first turn on the car and reverse out of my drive way and when i make a turn it gets louder. it is even now when I drive straight (you can slightly hear the noise). I first thought it may have something to do with the steering but since I can hear it when I drive straight, I don't think so anymore. I know I need to change my break pads and rotor disc soon, so I don't know if this may be the cause? I was also told that i would need to change my bushings but the mechanic said i could wait until i hit 115,000kms. Before it used to only happen within the first 10mins or so driving, but now even after doing a 20min+ trip I can still hear it. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone recommend a mechanic that would know what this may be? I don't have a lot of money to throw at mechanics that wouldn't have a slight clue about it. I'm located in the south western Sydney area.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Solution found!!!

Strut bearings Left side – That is the cause of the noise at the front of the car.

    All thanks to:

Getting louder when you turn suggests a CV (constant velocity) joint on its way out.

They are the things that allow the front wheels to turn whilst still driving the car — if allowed to go too far they can break (tow job.)

The Haldex coupling in the 4WD system might be overdue for an oil change, or may be showing signs of premature wear or failure.

The clunking in reverse, followed by some clunking as you drive off is a common symptom of this.

I went to a mechanic to replace a CV Boot in Feb, is this the same thing?

Can i change the oil myself? or would i most likely need a mechanic for this? if so, do you have a rough idea how much it cost?

Also i can see in your signature "DSG Servicing - $260, complete mobile service." is done by you? how come its so much cheaper than other places?

CV boot is the flexible cover that keeps dirt out of the CV joint.

Usually by the time the boot breaks up the joint itself is well on the way.

The Haldex coupling is something I'm not well versed in, so I'll leave that to the specialists.

thanks alot for the replies guys really appreciate it.
so i should start getting quotes on how much much cv joints cost to replace?
does anyone have a rough estimate of how much it would cost?

Probably a good idea to have it looked at first, before possibly replacing parts unnecessarily.

                  Hey Nina,

Its definitely something worth having looked at by a professional who can give you a straight answer on what the problem actually is. Whereabouts in Sydney are you? The problem you are having could be one of these things from what I've read and come across.

Worn rotors and pads - tend to make clunking noises at low speeds when parking or changing gears.

As others have mentioned it could also be a torn CV joint which will need attending to straight away if it is. However, from what I understand a CV joint noise is more of a 'clicking' sound than a noticeable 'clunk'. Which side of the car is the problem on? Does it get a noticeable louder when parking?

                    Yep, i sure will.
i've been told Exoticars and Beyond Limit Auto's are good so i will give them a call when i can.
anyone recommend any other good mechanics in west sydney to inspect it?
also ive been told i might be explaining the sound wrong, it might not be a clunking noise but more like a rubber clunking noise if that makes sense? almost like water boiling in a low tone lol
i will also be needing a DSG service soon so i will shoot you a pm for more details =)

I'm located in the Liverpool area West Sydney =)

Its possibly an issue with a CV joint, but you're likely to hear it when accelerating out of a side street, or similar.

The way you've described it, it sounds like its the Haldex, where it loads up as you're reversing out of your driveway, and then gradually unloading as you drive off.

So the Haldex is the 4Wd system and would a regular servicer change the oil in that?

Should be done every 30,000klm, off the top of my head. The oil and filter for the Haldex aren't cheap, but its not a time-consuming job.

The best advice I can give you is this: take it to a mechanic!

It's very hard to diagnose noises by looking at text on a page, especially when most of us are enthusiasts, and not nessecarily mechanics. If you take it to a mechanic with experience with your car (ie a Volkswagen/euro specialist, not the local k-mart tyre and auto!) they should be able to quickly diagnose the problem and quote you for a repair. They may do that for free, there may be a small labour charge. Part of the cost of ownership.

                            Hope this helps.

I've also got the same thunking noise too.

I've got a Golf Mk5 TDI 2.0. The problem is most obvious when "cruising" between 50-70km/h with no throttle.

The mechanics thought they found it when there was no grease around the CV joints, but the problem still persits, but not as badly. That seems to suggest that the CV joints have been damaged beyond repair, will find out tomorrow.

As far as describing the problem goes, it sounds like a loose wooden board is "wobbling" in the suspension.
