To give you added peace of mind and the assurance of added security, you have the option to extend the factory warranty to suit your ownership cycle. Volkswagen can offer you a 1 or 2 year unlimited km extension on your already existing Volkswagen Warranty. Volkswagen Roadside Assist is also included as part of any Volkswagen extended warranty. For further information regarding your vehicles factory warranty, please consult your local Volkswagen dealer or refer to your owner's handbook.
Knew I had read it somewhere. Key words - extend the factory warranty - implies full coverage same as new vehicle warranty.

I had a similar thing happen to my 97 Cherokee diesel. The thermostat (spelling?) failed and it wouldn't let the coolant get from the engine to the radiator. Temp gauge sensor is on the radiator so it was showing that the temp was on the first quarter of the gauge which i thought wa impossible for a diesel. It blew the head gasket and water started getting into the cylinders and it was blowing steam out of the exhaust. Anyway, took it to a mach that the warranty company recomended and he said that the heads need to be reconditioned (4 heads, $1300 each, stupid english design), plus the head gasket, plus labour. Here is the good part: because all this was caused by a thermostat failing, warranty wouldnt cover anything. I had to buy a new engine and that was $6000.
When i was getting my R, they tried to sell me warranty but i told them the whole story and the woman selling the warranty went all red
So no more any kind of warranties for me, except the factory warranty

A bit off-topic but it's a well known fault on diesel XJ Cherokees (I have a Petrol XJ). You got out of it cheap - $10k+ is the going rate these days.

PS: The diesel is an italian (VM) design

I understand the VW extended warranty is exactly the same warranty that comes with your new car. It also includes 2 years on road service.

The service requirements are exactly as in the the first 3 years.

          12.50 per week costs.

I bought my previous car with an extended 2 year warranty, believing I would either keep the car for the full 5 years or "on sell" the car with an extended warranty should I have sold it earlier.

Was a total waste of money as I sold the car after 3 years and was unable to transfer the warranty to the purchaser. (Yes my fault for not doing enough research)

Will never buy another extended warranty ever again.

Read the small print first - some extended warranties are excellent. For example, the "AlfaCare" extended warranty on our 147 was brilliant. No restrictive servicing conditions - I didn't even have to go to the dealer for service, just had to adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations. Everything was covered as per the manufacturer's 3-year warranty - and no claim $$$$ limits. Was also transferrable to the 2nd owner for a $50 fee. I had a few claims - had to get approval first, but no dramas, and it saved me a fortune. The Alfa warranty was underwritten by OAMPS - not sure who does the VW one.
