  • Extended Warranty - Mk5 GTI

    Hi all,

I'm fairly new to this forum but have never really had a chance to post much other than some faults I've had with my GTI speaking of which is in the final year of warranty.

I'm thinking is it worthwhile to purchase an extended warranty? I have been quoted about $1,300 for another 3 yrs but the dealer wasn't sure and didn't get back to me.

Has anyone purchased the extended warranty in Sydney? How much?

    Cheers

there was a thread on vwvortex the going rate seems to be around 1500$ so 1300 sounds alright. remember that turbo failure or any electrical faults will probably be upwards of 1500$ anyway... i'm going to get it when my warranty is out thats for sure.

Do you have to have serviced your car at the dealership to be able to get the extended warranty?

Just be careful mate... some extended warranties are as dodgy as hell. One in particular (name starts with H) forces you to bring back to the selling dealer - if you don't take it back to 'em, they void the extended part (naturally they can't touch the manufacturer warranty). On top of that, the extended part of the warranty only covers up to a certain amount if something costly lets go.

Rear the fine print, very carefully, before you make a decision.

I would "read" the fine print too. I opted out of getting extended when I first bought my car. Looks like you can still do it just before the warranty expires.

Extended Warranties are just a take. Many of them demand that you use expensive non approved fuel and oil additives and/or have your car serviced at a particular workshop. This way the dealer forces you to be loyal to them and buy expensive products from them every visit.

You should also remember that warranties only cover faulty workmanship and materials. They do not cover normal wear and tear. For example, even your new car warranty would not usually cover something like worn Brake or Clutch linings. I think you will experience trouble collecting on your expensive warranty if and when you need to.

Finally, these warranties are expensive. Put the money in a term deposit a couple of years and you have a pretty good slush fund to repair most defects.n:

That might cover a couple of faulty window regs or air con compressor but thats not going to cover something like a DSG box or something as drastic as that. Im not concerned if i have to pay for new brake parts (wear and tear) as long as im covered for things like DSG which i know would be killer if it went out of warranty.

Fair point, I understand where you are coming from but I would still be worried that a non ethical dealer would deem your broken DSG to be 'fair wear and tear'. After 100k it becomes fairly debatable what should fail and what should not.

These warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on!

This is something I'm gonna spend the next couple of years wondering about.
I have my RED , 3DR MKV GTI with leather in manual and I love it!

Are the VW warranties dealer warranties or VW Aust warranties?

If it's a VW Aust one, is it just like an extension of the factory warranty? Nissan etc have the same thing.

But I agree, if it's a dealer or 3rd party one, be careful. I have one for my 01 Jeep when I bought it - a/c evap went last year and they chipped in only $500 to the $900 bill - they said I should have used s/hand parts and my aircon guy was charging too much for labour !

At Xmas the water pump died and I'm still fighting that - the booklet says they cover water pumps, but they reckon that a seal failed and caused the pump to fail, which they don't cover (nor any subsequent loss). Yet to be resolved that one ...

If so, where do you get it from? CCC are pushing their dealer warrantee.
