  • time of order, commission number, and provision of vin.

    all are welcome to answer/comment...

i ordered a car on 24/12/07 and i was provided with a commission number last friday, 18/01/08. but i am yet to be provided with a vin. how much time elapsed between the order of your car and the dealer providing you with a vin?

i was told that the commission number was useful for monitoring an order, but that it really gives no indication of delivery time frame (for tracking shipping)... especially if the car is yet to be built - as i was told last week.

...so, what is the commission number? is it a confirmation of order from o/s, or is it just an internal (dealership generated) number?

is the vin able to be generated at time of order, or is it generated as the car rolls off the line?

i know i can't make my car arrive faster, i just don't want to have to wait any longer than i have to... having a vin would be reassuring.

oh, and btw... apologies for the many questions - this is the second car i have purchased - and my first o/s order. my current 2.0TDI was floor stock, so i only had to wait for tinting and PD service.

    thanks for your help.

Commission number means the information that is unique to your car, ie. australian compliance parts, oz spec suspension, etc etc, like a recipe for your car.

A VIN is available after it is built.

As for time taken, I am not sure, but there should not be too great a delay...

I thought read somewhere (can't remember where or when) that the VIN no is allocated at the factory when the car is "scheduled" for build (and this is also the point of no return as far as changing options etc), and this usually happens about a week or so before the build actually happens.

Of course I could be mistaken (my memory is less reliable than it used to be, something to do with old age I guess )

Im in the same situation as you.
I ordered in the 1st week of december and still as of yesterday the dealer could not tell me the VIN number & could not tell me the actual production date.

The only thing he could say was scheduled for production and that its due mid march, I was told this back when i ordered it.

Not happy with the dealer at the moment. I have not had one call from them, I am always having to call him then he says he'll call back and doesnt.

I asked twice via email for the VIN from the sales guy I was dealing with (at Camberwell VW). He always answered the other questions I asked in the emails but never gave me the VIN.

The car was delivered exactly on the day they said it was though so I wasn't too fussed. I just rang up two days before and the receptionist gave me the rego and VIN so I could arrange the insurance.

I ordered early November and was given a VIN early January. Once you hvae a VIN you can track it here under auto cargo http://schedule.2wglobal.com/AppTracking/cargoTrack.do. When I enter my VIN I can't see when it was built just when it was booked and when it was received at the terminal. You can click on the voyage to see the progress of the cargo ship.

I was also under the impression that when your car is booked you should be able to be given the VIN. VIN might only be available once the car is built though.

Not unless you can access the VWA order system. Once you get your VIN you will be able you to track the shipping to Oz part of the process, see this Skoda thread for more details (VWs are the same):

Basically you have to rely on your dealer for most of the info you want. Based on a few people's experiences it is worth carefully checking the order spec to make sure VW are building the exact vehicle you thought you were getting.
