  • 1.9 tdi engine turning off while driving

My dad complained his tri was running little rough so I purchased a can of liqui moli diesel fuel treatement. We added it to the tank and after 10 minutes on idle we went for a drive.

After first corner at 50 kmh the engine shut off. Took 5 minutes to restart. Went onto freeway to run it through as per instructions. Car switched off after 1km. Again took 5 minutes and so on. So now this is happening at random every drive since we put it in.

We have since changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump and still this is happening at random and its taking ages to turn the car back on after every time.

There is no fault codes coming up.

    Any ideas?

    thanks in advance

It could be that the fuel treatment kill some algae that was growing in the tank and the dead stuff has now sunk to the bottom and is clogging the fuel filters.

But I'd repost this in the diesel section as it doesn't seem like a Mk5 Golf specific issue.

Hm. since there was a problem already, I wouldn't blame the aditive for it. Take it somewhere where it could be properly diagnosed. It's a bit hard over the internet, and even harder when we only know that yours is 1.9TDI.

when you changed the fuel pump did you get the lines on the correct way around.. have seen it before when the pump has been removed that the lines are but back on incorrect place and it gives the fault you are saying.. it will run fine for a while then stall... loss of fuel.. then after cranking will start.. off memory when you lift the seat to gain access to the pump the blue return line should be closest to the drivers seat and black to the back of the car... worth a look... or like above alge is a issue on some golfs... strange it started before u went into the tank tho?

Absolutely NO fault codes at all? Not even in Central Electrics?

no fault codes is a good sign thats its fuel related.. poor fuel... no fuel.. fuel pumps duff.... if the pipes are good have a look in bottom of the tank for alge and also get a sample of fuel in a clear bottle and let it sit.. if there is water in there it will seperate...

No codes at all. Checked several times. Sometimes it will drive for few hundred kms with no issues. Sometimes every 5 kms. I'll check the tank
