  • Rear seat back removal

Has anyone removed the back of the rear seat in order to make more room for camping gear or whatever in their MkV Golf?

Any hints, tips or suggestions would be welcome

haha I was going to post this up yesterday. It's driving me crazy!

I'm going to have a better look at it today and hopefully make some progress. I think removing torque screws is the key...

First, go into the boot and remove the plastic thing at the back of the seats shaped like a wave that covers the bolts between the two fold down seats. This is what I couldn't remove last night and is really hard to get off. It requires force to be pulled back because it has to plastic clips. Maybe a screwdriver from the front will leverage it out?

Then all you need to do is get a torx bit to remove the metal plate that holds the two seats together in the middle.

The seats lock into the sides of the car by a horizontal pin about 40mm long. Dont remove them at an angle like other cars, pull them straight out to the side. The large seat still has the seatbelt attached because it's housed inside the seat which is annoying. I figure the only way to free the seat is to remove the large bolt with a large torx bit that secures the middle seatbelt. My huge drill bit set doesn't come with one torx bit even remotely this large so I'm off to the hardware store now

If you need a photo for all this, let me know but its straight forward once that plastic cover is pulled off.

      FYI
space saver + tool kit weighs 18kg
      small seat weighs 16kg
large seat (unsure but prob 25)
bench seat (unsure but prob 5)
So by removing the seats and spare wheel, your looking at over 60-70kg of weight saved. Sure it's in the back and the car is front heavy but I don't think its going to make the car that unstable, FWD and all.
