Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I think i'm the only one on here that MUCH prefers the look of the 5 door.
The C Pillar/rear door line flows similar to a Mk4 (for me)
Think the rear pillar on the 3Dr has too many angles. Thats just my 2 cents.
Plus I generally only drive around inner Melbourne and parking is a b*tch as it is without having larger doors to get out of narrow spaces...if that makes sensesigpic

i have 2 kids.
if i pick a car that has more than 2 doors available, that's the obvious choice.
but i don't limit my choice to 4 doors only cars. because kids will grow up and they will be able to get in/out themself. i will not suffer from driving white goods.

Bailey, you arent on your own with liking the 4 door model mate. They make a lot of sense I think unless you want a 2 door for the "sporty" touch?
Easier to clean the windows too!!!

the rear window line is what sold the 3 door for me! I think it looks much sportier the way it kicks up like it does.
Its all personal preference though. Getting in and out of the back seat is a hassle. There is plenty of space in there once youre in though. Its good. I get out of having to play taxi when we go out cos people whinge about having to climb into the back of my car.
But clearly the practical choice is a 5 door. I think thats why most people go that option. My car was for me though so screw everyone else

3dr FTW!
We got one of the first few 3drs in Australia and collected it in mid-November 2006.
Since they have become available, sales of 3drs have been much less than 5drs I believe. Apart from the obvious, the only other major point of difference is that 3drs are built in Wolfsburg. Mind, whether that gives you anything more than a warm fuzzy feeling is open to debate.
Cheers Liam

Mine is a German Shorthaired Pointer so doesnt lose all that much hair which is a bonus too. She's pretty placid and just squats down in the back. Sand is a bit of a b*tch but thats life I guess

3drs look hotter than a 5dr but i would have still chosen a 5dr (not that i had a choice) because of the kid factor....its a pain getting him in and out the back of the Pogo but dont do it much thankfully.1986 MkII Golf GTI 16V (Sold), 2005 MkV Golf GTI (Sold), 2007 Polo GTI (Sold), 2011 Polo 66TDI (Selling), 2012 Passat 125 TDI Bluemotion, 2013 Scirocco R (Due October!)

i have a 3dr and now wish i had 5dr. Although i agree it looks damn hot.
there are a few probs.
1) getting in and out of back,
2) vaccuming the back seats
3) If someone smashes you in the side, you can't just replace the rear door panel, they have to either cut it up or replace the whole A to C pillar panel - **** design.
Just my 2 cents.
The american who can't get 5dr GTI's - LOVE the 5drs!!! again, it's a matter of envy of something you can't have...MY2007 BM 3Door GTI, DSG, Parking Sensor, Carbon Tint Windows, GIAC X, Scratched Alloys on LHS - NOT done by me!
