Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • DSG service?

    Hi folks,
My Jetta 147 is due for a service, it is 5 years old with 30,000 Kms only.
I read lots of different things saying a service should be at so many years or so many Kms....opinions?
I will get a service around 32,000 then another at 45,000...should DSG be done now, then or 60,000???
    Current - 2015 Tiguan 155 R-Line.
Previous - Jetta MkV 147 Turbo, Viezu Raceday mapped, Carbonio CAI, Quad Exhaust System, R8 Coil pack, Whiteline Swaybar, GTi Steering wheel with paddles, Alloy pedals, RNS510 & Leather.

You will always get mixed opinions on this. Bascially the way I see it a gearbox is what, around 10k? A mechatronics -4k? Why shift out on the manufactures recommended change just to save maybe $300 at most? To me $300 is a small price to pay when considering it could cost you min 4k... Although if it's 7 speed it's sealed for life...

I would do the DSG, like azza12342 said may as well do it by age as the oils been sat around for 5 - 6 years and a few hundred $ is better than 10K down the line for a new box plus more $$ for fitting it....

At 60,000klms will be fine, but it's up to you.

I was in a sort of similar situation. An 07 which hadn't made 60,000km yet.

I decided to change the oil and filters anyway. Made a big difference especially at low speed and when it takes off in 2nd. Alot smoother.

It isn't alot of money if you're intending on keeping the car or doing a few more KM in it than it has done so far.

I did my DSG service at 52,000kms - shortly after purchasing the gti.

Piece of mind that its done properly, and sooner rather than later, is always best!

In the European market, the stated DSG oil and filter replacement interval is 60 000 km with no time interval. Some markets have a 4 year time interval, but IMO, I think it's just there to coincide with 15 000 km/1 year service intervals (i.e. 60k/4yr).

There is no harm in doing it earlier, but as Umai said, it's entirely up to you.

At your current rate, you will reach 60 000 km in 10 years. If you plan on keeping the car beyond this period, a DSG service between the 5-10 year mark may not be so pointless.

If you are planning to sell or trade-in the vehicle before then, I'd leave it.

So if we are looking at a 15 year time frame, I'm thinking a DSG service every six years might be a good compromise.

I'd get it done. Everything to gain, nothing to lose except a relatively small amount of money which is soon forgotten.

How on earth can a car take 12 months between build & delivery?

                          brad, you'd be amazed!

My last car was an early 08 build, complianced about 8 months later and then bought my me a further 10 months after compliance sticker was attached.

The end result, and what won me over me was 1) a potential 6 month wait for what I wanted and 2) wiping about $10,000 off the RRP of the vehicle. Everything was spot on except for the colour. It was black so not my preference but black looks awesome anyway so not the worst thing in the world.

As for the OP's dilemma. To my understanding in this model DSG the same oil is used throughout the clutch packs, the gearbox parts and also the mechatronics. This means the oil is exposed to areas which can generate extreme heat in a short period of time, experience long periods of constant temperatures and then be expected to flow through a complicated series of electronic valves and pumps. Even though it has its own internal filter it is still an oil and all oil regardless of how expensive it is has a small flaw....it typically breaks down with heat and age.

I changed mine even though it theoretically didn't need to be done according to the service books and the only differences I noticed were smoother clutch releases particularly in 2nd gear and a temporarily lighter wallet.

Might've sat on the lot for a while.

I know one customer's car did before she bought it. Dealer had it in stock for over 12 months, before she came along.
