  • Brake pad measure GTI

Anyone able to tell me how low the pads get before the replacement warning comes on?

Up to 55000km of ~70% highway and still no sign of pad replacement required.

I think it's about 3mm, but that can change if the discs have a massive lip on them.

55K on the original pads isn't too bad.

Most pads will have a groove in them. When the groove can no longer be see, the pads should be replaced. 3 mm on a brake pad is a little low. You would want at least the thickness of the backing plate as friction material.

        Yeah, that's the general rule.

Although some like to use the knocking of the pads against the internal vanes of the disc as a good indicator...

Haha, thanks. Wasn't planning to wait to grind away at the backing plate!

The GTI has a sensor for brake wear does it not?

Will look at the grooves and see if I can tell how much is left. And yes, I realise 55k from a GTI isnt bad going - the last 40000 has been 95% highway + extra-urban driving (although the first 15000 was cbd grind....)

Yeah, it'll have one on the passenger's side inside pad. Rears have them both sides, from memory.
