Most pads will have a groove in them. When the groove can no longer be see, the pads should be replaced. 3 mm on a brake pad is a little low. You would want at least the thickness of the backing plate as friction material.
Haha, thanks. Wasn't planning to wait to grind away at the backing plate!
The GTI has a sensor for brake wear does it not?
Will look at the grooves and see if I can tell how much is left. And yes, I realise 55k from a GTI isnt bad going - the last 40000 has been 95% highway + extra-urban driving (although the first 15000 was cbd grind....)
