  • MKV Jetta License Plate Light Module removal

So i bought a replacement LED module to replace the existing bulb module with and i'm having difficulties taking the darn thing out.

The tutorials that i've seen on the net show that once i remove the clear lens and bulb carrier, i should see a clip on the side and then a small flathead will be able to get the entire module out.

However, on removal of the lens from mine, i get greeted with a large rubber gasket which can't be removed and i can't seem to feel any cllips behind it.

Any idea on how i can take this out?

    Cheers

Sorry to potentially be the bearer of bad news, but if it is the same as mine (late '06 - early '07) you will find the lights and the handle are all one piece. You have to remove the bootlid liner (four screws and the clips around the edge) and from memory there are about five or six nuts that need to be removed for the whole assembly to come out of the car. Might be easier to get some cheap error free LEDs from eBay until you can work out what needs to be done to get the modules into place.

ahh dammit....... it looked so easy just going off guides on the net!!! why is it that ours are so much more difficult?!

so what did you do with yours? (if you switched to LEDs)

i had a look at those no-code LEDs on ebay and there are tons, some cheap some expensive so i don't even know where to begin... any recommendations?

I just bought the cheapest and went from there. So far I have had two sets, and both have lasted about twelve months each. Not really an issue for about $3 a pair delivered.

there are so many on ebay now!
some have 6 leds, some have 3, which ones did you use before?
i'm just concerned about the heat that they are supposed to give off which may melt the light module as i've read?

          thanks for the help

LED's should be cooler than a standard bulb shouldnt they.

apparently the resistors they use to make them have no codes put out a bit of heat

The resistors are the culprit when it comes to heat. And I have only ever bought the three SMD festoon LEDs. Give plenty of light, actually, I noticed last night I am in need of another set, one is just starting to "die". Best thing is, when they "die" for external use, you can still use them in the vanity mirror lights! That circuit isn't monitored so doesn't require load resistors.

ah ok that's good to know.

what dimensions are the festoons that we need?

So now i'm narrowing down a set to get.

there are these for ultra cheap and am i right in assuming these are similar to the $3 ones you were talking about?2x 39mm White 3 SMD LED Festoon Canbus Lights No OBC ERROR CODE for Benz Audi | eBay

those don't have a heatsink so i'm slightly wary of those

on the other hand i can find ones like these: C5W 36MM 3 SMD LED CAN BUS OBC ERROR FREE Number Plate bulbs VW | eBay

costs more but has a heatsink.

                  Ideas?

Those are pretty much what I have. No heatsink and they still last for around twelve months! And compared to some that are spruiked around the forums, you can buy around twenty sets of these for the same money..... You do the math. lol

                      lol

well now i'm paying for it after buying a complete module and it not working with our cars *sigh*

What size lights did you buy? i can see numerous sizes that are available and they all somehow say that they are suitable for our cars!

Sorry mate, should have been clearer. 39mm is the size you will need.

LED NUMBER/LICENCE PLATE BULBS VW GOLF MK5 PASSAT 06+ | eBay

well, i just bought these after finding out that one of the halogens blew... AGAIN...arghhhhh seems they only last a year or so then they like to go kaput.

worst part is that when i take out the bulbs, the element still seems to be in tact!

i'll update this thread when they arrive
