Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MFD blacking out - 2006 MkV

Did a quick search but very little on it suggesting not that common?

Have the Comfortline version of the MFD.
Twice in the past few months the MFD has "blacked out" ie nothing visible but there is still a faint red glow in the background suggesting it is getting power?
First time I noticed it not working having just driven out of the garage (ie car had not been parked in the hot sun). Nothing at all, stayed off despite turning ignition off and restarting a few times. Then, after being parked for a few hours (in the hot sun funnily enough) it was working normally and has done so since.
Today I watched it black out as I was driving - initially everything went but that horizontal line and then a few seconds later a bit of a flicker and all went blank. It remained off for another 15 minutes, and then having parked the car for a few minutes upon restarting all fine again.
Clearly an intermittent fault that seems to fix itself, like a few other little gremlins I have had with this car (the passenger door not unlocking, the cruise control not turning on occasionally), so I am not going to rush off to the dealer only to be told "you get that from time to time, come back and see us when it goes off permanently". However I would be keen to hear from others whether this does eventually descend into complete failure, and if so what is the fix? Is it just the LCD screen that fails or am I looking at an entire new dash unit, and if so what is the damage?? Warranty long gone so if I am potentially looking down the barrel at several thousand notes worth of new electronic gear it might strengthen the case (in my mind at least) to move the car along sooner rather than later. Cheers and thanks for reading!!

See if you can find a how to on removing the cluster and just re set the plug.

    Do the easy things first.

I don't think you'll need thousands of dollars worth of electronic equipment. A second hand cluster from eBay won't cost $1k, easy

I've noticed my mfd is doing something weird as well, some of the text will slightly fade out usually on very hot days. But it never goes completely blank, I'm hoping it won't get worse..

Mine also does it on really hot days. Common issue maybe?

Mine did the same one night. I was heading home and all of a sudden it decided to have patches missing when I started the car. It started getting worse so I pulled over and turned off the car. I turned it back on again and it was worse. Continued driving and slowly but surely it all disappeared.

The next day it was all fine and back to usual. Hasn't happened again, so I'm thinking its just a random error that occurs, haven't heard of anyone having to replace their MFD.
