Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Curbed GTI wheels

Just curbed the off side wheels on my mk5 GTI. They weren't perfect before but now this damage will annoy the hell out of me. They are the standard 17" ones.

Has anybody used or know of a good wheels refurbisher? I'm in Manly, Syd.
And anyone an idea of price? Car needs new tyres pretty soon so that could be a good time to do it I guess.

Where do you get the matching touch up paint from? What colour is closest match to original?

I have a few scratches that I'd like to touch up...

i would keep my eyes open for a set on ebay

you then either have some spares for another day

or resell them with your damaged one

There is a place in that industrial estate in Artarmon called Alloy Pro or Alloy Wheel Pro or something like that - you can actually see it from the Gore Hill freeway heading North. I went down to get a quote a while back and they seemed like a pretty slick outfit - in the end too expensive for me so I did not proceed - from memory the cost for repair of a wheel was getting up towards $200.

There's a handy guide on the detailing thread including info on appropriate paint etc.

Might be worth a crack, the outcome seemed pretty good for the investment.

Depends on what the damage is like. Ive fixed curbed rims with just a spoon shaped scraper used to "burnish" the damaged areas.
Then a some paint or clear to finish.
