  • Drivers Window not working

I've done a search and didn't find anything that could help a noob like me.

Today I had an issue with my 2005 Golf Tdi. I parked at the shops and the drivers window was down about 3 inches and now it won't move. All the other windows work as normal. I've tried resetting by using the key in the door, but still not working.

I'm assuming the window motor is stuffed. Could it be anything else? It pissed down with rain on the way home which furtehr added to my happy mood.

Im going to pull the door apart tomorrow, if it is the motor, where is the cheapest place to buy a new one? VW dealer?

    any advice appreciated.

Check before you buy parts — it may only be a bad contact.
Also these models are known to have a problem with the wires breaking where they flex when the door opens and closes.
Naturally, it's most common in the driver's door.
As to replacement cost I haven't a clue, but the cheapest supplier won't be the dealer — Google is your friend here.

      ^^ This.

Where the wiring harness passes from the door to the A-pillar, peel back the rubber boot. You'll probably see a few broken wires in there.

I highly recommend replacing the wiring harness, even though it's a cow of a job. You need to remove the outer door skin to get at it.

mine does this also, but it does work.
It goes up and stops about 10cm from top then goes back down, it doesnt do it all the time.
Its a pain when it rains and you need it to go all the way up and it refuses to sometime.
        Any ideas?

Could be a wiring fault, but my first move would be to check for a sticky section in the glass channel — maybe spray a bit of silicon or teflon lube into both channels (not WD40 or any other petroleum based lubricant.)

If you can find one, I've found teflon-based sprays work better.

I went out to the garage yesterday and said to the missus..."it would be nice if it just worked today" and sure enough, i put the keys in the ignition and pulled up on the window button and the window went up. Weird problem. It is now working fine, yet yesterday it wouldn't budge.

This happened to my passengers side window, but the window still worked when I held the lock or unlock button on the remote.. I pulled the drivers side master power window switch out and put it back in and now it works fine..

                Check for obstructions as well.

If the drive experiences a high resistance to movement, it might think that it has reached the end of its travel and so shut off.

Sorry for the thread jack, but whilst were on the topic of power windows has anyone else notice an annoying bug with the windows where you one touch the master (on the drivers door) switch to bring the windows automatically, they roll all the way up but then once they reach to the up position they automatically go back down about half way.. I have noticed my car goes through phases of doing this, it seems ok at the moment but for a while there it was doing it often, was very annoying.

Perform a window reset. Hold button "up" for 10 seconds, Hold button Down for 10 seconds, and Up again.

The windows have safety roll back feature. If something obstructs the window going up it will stop and roll back. This can happen if you have crud build-up in the window channels.

                          Drivers Window not working

It may be something inside the door, I lost a suction cup off a baby window shade in the door of another car and it was doing the same thing.

Mine did this. It was the solenoid? rather than the motor that was stuffed. Normally these two items are a single part, but my trusty mechanic had just the solenoid lying around from another car. He replaced it and now it's fine.

My 2005 Mk V Sportline is doing the same thing. Drivers window was working intermittently so I thought it was the switch. I bought a new switch from VW for $90 and it's still happening. Now it has stopped working altogether. I pulled the drivers door switch box out and disconnected the connector. All other windows working and I can hear an electric clicking noise when I depress the drivers door button but the window doesn't move, hence I figure the switch is ok. Sounds like it might be a wiring issue as mentioned earlier. Tried all the holding the remote keys up and down and the 3 other windows work but not he drivers door. Can anyone tell me why the sunroof is not opening and closing with the windows?
