Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Just remember to replace your struts (shocks) as well, otherwise your stock struts will die fairly quickly with the new lowered springs, it becomes quite expensive once you factor that in, I would probably look at coil overs instead...

I bought these for my ride and they say they are compatible with OEM shocks: 1 8" Drop Suspension lowering Springs Spring 05 11 Golf GTI Jetta Audi A3 Yellow | eBay
They seem to work OK for me and I think the ride height is just right....

Is the ride a bit bouncier now?

Wouldn't say bouncier but firmer and also quite choppy on undulating surfaces. Also, because the suspension is closer to the bump stops it tends to bottom out on the stops over bumps it would have previously ridden over normally.

Not sure the looks outweigh the impracticality of having the car lowered and are seriously thinking of putting the standard springs back in........

Its not a matter of compatibility, most after market springs will be "compatible" with oem shocks, but the problems is they dramatically shorten the life of the shocks. The stock shocks are not engineered to handle the harder more bouncy springs, H&R sell a spring and shock combo which is what I would be looking at:

H&R Cup Kits | Products || H&R Special Springs, LP

Or alternatively I would be looking at seeing if stock GTI springs/ shocks will fit a Jetta..
