Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

    Cigarette Lighter

    The cigarette lighter in the console does not have power for plugging in my Tom Tom. The one in the boot does so I figure it's not that the fuse is blown (unless they each have their own fuse), any answers as to how to fix it or what the issue maybe?

    They have separate fuses.

    The simplest way to check if the fuse has failed is to go through the fuses un the panel under the steering column one at a time, making sure that you remember where you pummed it out. The fuse is in the section with the standard blade fuses and not the mini-blade fuses.

      Also a possible reason for this is leaving things plugged into it. With my old car had my phone charger in there all the time and it eventually stopped working.

      Now I make sure to unplug things from the cigarette lighter unless I am using them.

        And did they stop working because of a blown fuse or some other issue?

          Many thanks. I read the manual but it was not clear one fuse or two or even where the fuse box is, behind the glove compartment or below the. Steering column.

          I'll ferret around and see what I can find.

            It is in the panel under the steering column. There is a fuse for the cigarette lighter, and then a separate fuse for the accessory sockets. Unfortunately you will probably find that all leave the sockets and lighter powered all the time. It used to be an ADR that the lighter socket was only able to be powered with the ignition in the on or accessory position. There was even a recall of Polos to rectify this, but now it seems as though manufacturers can do what they want.

              Our 2010 Polo only has power to the ciggy socket if key is in ACC or On position.

              Just went out and tried it.

              Passat is the same front and rear sockets as wanted to use rear for a camera and had to run new wires to enable it to stay on in parking mode

                On my MY11 Caddy Maxi Life, it is on all the time as standard, meaning if it gets stuck (for whatever reason), you have to either find the appropriate fuse and remove it, or go for the battery, all the time the element is trying to do what it was designed to...start a fire.

                I have had to add a circuit that is powered from the ignition on side to overcome this.
