Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Which radio upgrade for 08 jetta

My bro just got a 2008 Jetta tdi and want to upgrade the radio to one with say nab and iPod function. Can someone tell me what units we should be looking out for. After one that will slot straight in and work with minimal fuss. Thanks

I would personally go the RNS-510.

Love the full integration of the OEM units.

RNS510 is fantastic but its not cheap and the Ipod function is a separate component you need to buy and add. Cheapest option will probably get a double din face plate for the jetta and go buy an all in one unit from someone like Pioneer, Kenwood or Alpine.
There are cheaper copies of the RNS510 out there on ebay made in china that are supposed to be plug and play and have everything including bluetooth and Ipod already included. Better to go search in the Audio section of the forum.

I had a Kenwood in Our 08 Jetta.
I threw that in the bin and bought a Yum-Cha model specific from ebay (local seller too)
I did get a bung one, the DTV didn't work and I couldn't change the Logo.

He swapped it straight away, and its been the best thing I've installed in the car.
The Digital TV works fine (when a good antenna is connected) the reverse camera works fine, the screen and look is great, the sound is OK. The best part is It runs CE6 and runs IGo with sensis maps.

        cost a total of $400

Krytox, can you use the steering wheel buttons for the radio?

I recommend checking out this thread http://http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/f78/ans-810-ans-510-proper-rns-510-alternative-73179.html i have the ans510, it's not quite an rns510 alternative but it is a lot cheaper and easier (no can bus upgrade required). I also like that its retained the stock look and steering controls.

Yes, the Steering buttons work, volume channel, source and phone.
It was this one I bought: VW Volkswagen Golf Passat 7" DVD GPS Bluetooth Receiver | eBay
Sorry for when the link expires to others in the future.

Like I said, I had a Kenwood unit in the car, sure it sounded better, but this one does More than I could need.
