  • GPS and UV windscreens

I was wondering if anyone has had any success in using a GPS unit mounted behind a UV windscreen? Most European cars now are fitted with windscreens that have a UV laminate, and I understand from VW Australia, that a GPS will not work, as the film filters out most, if not all, the signal.

GPS is a toy I've had my eye on for a while, and I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has one up and running in a VW (mine is a Jetta with all windows extra tinted)

    Cheers

    Brian

My TomTom One works fine mounted at bottom of the windshield on driver's side. No need to get a special aerial.

I don't think the extra tinting will have any effect, since I don't believe it is allowed to add any extra tinting to windshield.

Yeah for some cars with the UV windscreen, you may need an external aerial.

You should be able to get gps lock at bottom corners of the windscreen left or right

          Thanks guys,

          Now you've really confused me.

It's interesting to see you have it working ok despite VW's opinion.
There is no tint in the laminate. It's a clear UV film like on prescription spectacles, which just cuts down on heat transmission.

That's the conventional wisdom over at VW Australia, but I'm heartened by dilbert_rocks post.

I guess what I need to do now, is to find someone with one I could borrow for an hour or two.

          Cheers

Tom Tom and navman both work in the bottom centre and bottom right of my windscreen with no dramas.

              E-tag is a different story.

My Nokia 6110 Navigator mobile phone (has a GPS and routing inbuilt) works fine in my 07 Jetta, even when sitting in the tray between the gear lever and centre console.

Sounds like the VW man was trying to sell you the factory SatNav

Where are you located? My Navman works fine on my MK4.
